1968 Hemi Dart Super Stock
1968 Dodge Dart
Let me start of by saying this car always draws a lot of attention and numerous compliments. The most asked and most complementary question is, Is this car real”? The answer is and always has been, o it is not.
I would be remiss if I didn’t say thank you to those who helped in this build.
1.Dan States at Superior Muscle Cars who once again allowed me to work with with him side by side on a daily basis for this nut and bolt restoration.
2.Darin Rumple (previous owner of the Bob Lambeck Hemi Dart) whose help was invaluable. Darin provided the motor work, rought in Bruce Crandall of Total Engine Service for the head rebuilding, raciously sold me numerous real Super Stock only parts that he was keeping for himself and kept me on the straight and narrow as to correctness and detail work.
3.Skip Lisell for crafting the custom built headers from scratch, hey are a work of art. The ability to to install the passenger side headers in one piece from the underside and the drivers side in two pieces with the motor installed and the front suspension in place is truly unheard of.
4. My wife for once again putting up with me during the build, ever once complaining and for being interested in the work being done.
The Mission Statement here is simple: Build a Hemi Dart in the as delivered look, aint the exterior, uild it as correctly as possible and make it street friendly. If you know, nderstand and love these cars like I do, believe you will agree that this best and most correct tribute car built to date. It certainly contains more real, riginal and correct parts than other builds and with several that are Super Stock specific.
The car itself originally came from the Southwest and still retains all of its original panels. The only rust repair necessary was one small dime size are on a lower quarter panel which was repaired properly. The body was media blasted top and bottom. It was painted in PPG DBC base and Concept clear, Q1 color code and black in the engine bay and trunk. The bottom of the car is painted in grey single stage urethane to resemble the original primer color these cars came with. Almost all other surfaces were either gun painted or powdercoated. The only parts I recall using a rattle can on are the engine pulleys.
The motor is a correct date code 1966 426 Hemi block. It was rebuilt, s .030 over, ever windowed, cracked or sleeved. New pistons, tandard crank, ompletely rebuilt heads with all new components, ew cam and lifters, ew pushrods, riginal magnesium crossram intake, riginal carbs-rebuilt and perfectly tuned, riginal correct numbers aluminum water pump. original 033 radiator with new triple core, riginal one year only NOS mechanical drive dual point distributor, riginal correct pulleys, riginal valve covers, ebuilt correct alternator, even blade aluminum clutch fan, emi K-Frame powdercoated, SD 6al-digital hidden behind glove box. Motor was broken in on a dyno and made 552hp @ 6500 rpm with 500 ft. lbs. of torque.
The remaining highlights are as follows: 8 ¾ rearend-4:10 gear-pinion angle set for car-perches moved for the offset leaf springs, ew super stock springs, heel wells and driver shock tower modified to match original Hurst work, uperstock battery in trunk with correct trays and tie downs, riginal style battery terminals, ll new brakes-drum rears and disc fronts, ig bolt pattern front spindles, assenger side under dash air box is original and quite rare, ew ⅜” fuel line and sender, ew brake lines and hoses, ew shocks, riginal Hemi Dart seats and brackets-also quite rare, riginal mirror delete plate, orrect radio and heater delete plates, tahl period correct mechanical tach,Darin rebuilt the 727 tranny-upgraded to handle engine horsepower and more,Cheetah shifter-reverse manual pattern, front wheels are original Hurst 5 spoke-serial numbered, oodyear front tires 7.50-14, ear tires are Mickey Thompson Radirs-30x10.00-15, ear wheels are 15x7 powdercoated, ini starter, ront end completely rebuilt with Moog parts and aligned by Skip Lisell, echromed bumpers, master cylinder relocated and installed as Hurst did it, s much as possible I used all original correct fasteners-yes a couple are not, here is an original “blue box” transistor ignition box mounted on the firewall under the dash-it is for looks only, nterior has all new carpet and headline, enders from AAR and hood from Cynergy Composites. These are the highlights and I’m sure I’ve missed some things. Happy to answer any serious inquiry. All shipping costs to be paid for by buyer.
