1973 Dodge Challenger 340 Pistol Grip
1973 Dodge Challenger
I'm the2nd owner & have owned for 27 yrs. I have never had it on the road or plated, it always sat inside my building since I bought it, and have been picking at it 1 repair at a time, over last few yrs. I have a clear Ky title in my hand. I'm only selling because I have other projects to concentrate on. This will not leave my property until we go to the court house & transfer the title, so plan on coming during the week.
This is a factory 340 4-speed, pistol grip, no console, am radio, with a/c, triple black car. I do have the orig #'s matching 340, that is all apart, ready for complete rebuild. I have all the orig parts. All parts look rebuildable. Heads look like hell from sitting in my shop collecting moisture, but will clean up. The engine that is in it, is a '74 318 with a steel crank & J-heads. I installed the orig 340 oil pan, intake, valve covers, & air cleaner to keep orig looking. Engine runs strong, no smoke once warmed up, no knocking, no leaks. Only fluidleak on whole car is the orig radiator is seeping just a little. I installed a Carter AFB with manual choke. Could stand to be tuned a bit, otherwise starts & runs good. I have a video of it running, if you'd like me to send it to you. I also have the origThermoquad carb & choke that comes with. Before installing the 318, I replaced the freeze plugs, gaskets, valve seals, plugs, distributor assembly, air filter, pcv valve, oil sending unit, temp sending unit, fuel pump & filter, all fuel lines, radiator cap, water pump, thermostat & housing, double roller timing chain, belts, all hoses, alternator, voltage regulator, ballast resistor, ignition control module, battery cables, starter,& starter relay. I rebuilt the orig A-833 4-spd with new synchronizer assemblies & gaskets. I installed a new clutch, & had the flywheel turned. New updated poly trans mount. New engine mounts. I do have the originals. New power steering hoses too. New u-joints. Brand new dual OE exhaust system from front to back, just like factory, with the orig hangers, & new stainless proper tips. The pass side manifold is a nice correct used replacement, while the drivers side is a new NOS correct style. I do have a lot of the orig a/c components, I just decided to leave off until I rebuilt orig 340. The compressor has been rebuilt. There is a pic of what components I have. The only thing that I see that needs attention, is the pass side exhaust manifold is leaking lightly, but I have a replacement gasket already. Battery is good.
I pulled gears out, replaced gasket & fluid, & pinion snubber rubber. Replaced axle bearings & gaskets. Still has orig 3.23 posi gears that are clean but a little loose. Also replaced rear brake shoes, wheel cylinders, hardware kits, adjusters, hard & flex lines. had drums turned. I replaced front rotors which are a little rusty from sitting now but will clean up, pads, calipers, hard & flex lines, wheel bearings & seals, master cylinder, & brake booster. The parking brake cables are froze up but I have good used onesto replace with, & will come with. All 4 shocks are new. I removed the rear sway bar to make exhaust install easier, broke the end link bolts, haven't ordered new ones. So, it is not in the car at the moment but will obviously be included. The wheels are nice15"Dodge cop car wheels with nice 50 series tires on back, & 60 series tires on front that will need replaced soondue to dry rotting.
This car came from northern Indiana, so does have quite a bit of surface rust all over, but not a lot of through rust & still very solid. Please look at pics close. Worst is on firewall above wiper motor, but do have a clean replacement piece. Drivers door on inside is rusty. Quarters & front fenders have rust but minimal for these. Radiator support & inner fender in battery tray area was rusty & I welded in a couple repairs, also installed new batt tray & brace. Top of front frame rail in that area is rusted pretty thin. Rest of frame is solid but with surface rust. Has some typical dents, but overall a straight car. all sheet metal was all orig when I bought it, but did replace the hood, trunk lid, & gas cap with decent used. The front & rear valance, & drivers door handle is brand new. Front bumper is really decent, while back one has a bend in it, but decent chrome as well. Rest of chrome & stainless trim is in really good cond, except for 1 piece of rear window trim having a dent, but I have a nice replacement that goes with. There is 1 piece of chrome trim that is missing from lower grill. Both grilles are nice, as well as both bumper filler pieces. There is also 1 piece of painted trim missing from the hood lip. I do have the vinyl top chrome pieces that are nice as well. The floor pans were nice except for drivers pan, which I replaced with new, using proper procedure by drilling factory spot welds, then plug welding back using orig spot weld locations. I do have extensive pics of the work that I did, & will gladly send them to you. I then seemed sealed everything, & painted with black enamel. Trunk floor needed 3 smaller patches made & welded in, then seem sealed & painted as well. Orig spare tire that looks bout new, & complete jack assembly is mounted back in correct locations. I replaced the gas tank with a used one that looked absolutely new on the inside, also new sending unit. The black paint is orig but the white stripe is not. All glass is orig & good. All windows roll down. All locks work. The underside has a lot of surface rust too where the undercoating is worn off, but again, not a lot of through rust.
The interior is orig & complete except for the headliner, carpet(new sound deadener comes with), shelf speaker cover, radio,& 3 of the 4 bucket seat hinge covers. Dash has 1 crack in the center, otherwise nice. Shifter boot is new. Drivers seat is ripped bad, pass side has some stitching coming undone, otherwise nice. Back seat is nice. door panels have some fading, otherwise pretty nice. Most of the lights work inside & out. Temp gauge, oil pressure gauge, horn, & tach don't work, but everything else seems to. I do have all of the headliner bows. Visors & other trim inside is nice, including seat belts.
I think I have explained everything, but if I think of anything else, I'll revise the ad. I encourage anybody to come & look at the car in advance. Also to text, call, or email with any questions. Cell # 419-771-ninezerosixtwo. I don't need help selling, & I don't put up with any BS from anyone! I don't have time or patiencefor deadbeat losers! I will not help with making shipping arrangements, but will gladly help load. I have a boatload of pics that I took, but can only put 24 on here. I have close up pics of the rusty areas. Please text me if you want pics of anything. I also have video of it running. This would make a great restoration project, or a great project while you drive it. It starts, runs, shift, drives, & stops, but not road ready. I have only lot driven up & down my driveway. I also have a new repro owners manual. I do not have a buy it now price. I am located in Georgetown, Ky 40324. I expect $1000 non-refundable down payment to be paid through PayPal, with remainder due within 7 days of end of auction, in cash. I also require that it gets picked up within 7 days, unless you make other arrangements with me. Thank you
