1950 Dodge Wayfarer Sportabout

1950 Dodge Wayfarer Sportabout American Roadster
Rare opportunity to own a unique part of automotive history. Part of only a few in the private collection of a respected classic car investor. Being sold by the family of Joe Egle Motors.
How much sheet metal and chrome can you fit into the roadster format? Quite a bit! And when will we ever have a model like "Sportabout" again?
Coming out of WWII, the big three took awhile to tool up production. When this model was released in 1949 it came with side curtains - yes, like an MGA. In the important California market a law had just been passed requiring the use of hand signals in the event of turn signal malfunction. The side curtain was not a great fit for that requirement so, the next year added fancy roll up windows!

Exterior --This remarkable example was found after an extensive search. In 1989 it had 67k original miles and was part of a collection in Salem, VA. In 1990-91, it was restored to better than new. A top was custom fabricated using better manufacturing standards than an assembly line. See pics for records. It has been preserved in living room condition ever since.
Interior Details -Remarkable preservation. The radio was restored in the 1990s. Not everyone bothers. This owner knew the difference and took care of the car properly.
Engine & Transmission --Known as the "Get-Away" 6. It was matched with a "Gyromatic" transmission. No less than 4 pages of the original manual are devoted to this gateway technology to the full automatic. Put the car in "high" and cruise around without the clutch. Part of the innovative discipline and skill at Chrysler known as the "Fluid Drive" system.
Spotless, honest undercarriage -
