1968 Dodge Coronet Wagon 440 California Car Surfer Wagon NO RESERVE AWESOME
1968 Dodge Coronet
1968 Dodge Coronet Wagon. I call this my surfer wagon, as it has a surfer motif, complete with surfboards and rack. Don't like that look, all is removeable. Either way, this is an EXCELLENT example with a faux-tina done to it to make it look like it was pulled out of a field. Nothing could be farther from the truth as it is an original California car. Paint on it likely was in need of a refresh so rather than repainting the car, it was scuffed, all the way to bare metal like on the drivers fender, to show the original color of pale yellow and allowing it to get some surface rust on it. I have had plenty of cars with rust and even real weather patina, this is not rusted. It has two bubbles on each of the rear fenders as shown in the pictures. Passengers side rear drip rail also has a bit of rust, but that is the worst on this car. Underneath, it is 100% solid and rust free. If you did not like the look, you would have nearly zero prep to get this to paint.
Now, under the hood, the original 318 was swapped with a period correct 440 with low miles. The 440 was partially disassembled to inspect it replace anything needed, but the engine builder said it was the cleanest 440 he had seen and it needed nothing, but new bearings andgaskets were installed. It is a little cold natured here in the Midwest, butonce warmed up it a blast todrive. No smoke or other issues. Gets up and runs down the road and gets plenty of looks. Plenty of power on demand. Throaty exhaust tone is nice but not obnoxious. The US Mags in 18 up front and 20s out back tuck perfectly and set off this wagon. The Charger gas cap just completes the look, IMO. Plenty of tread is left on the tires (surprisingly). Pictures do not do justice to this wagon as it is much nicer in person.
The interior is in excellent shape. The front and rear seatshave been recovered in period correct style, door cards are original but still in good shape.Rear is clean. The headliner is the one weak point as it is need of replacement, but who drives looking atthe headliner? Who goes to a car show and even notices?Anyway, if you wanted to replace it that would be the one area of improvement. Glass is all good, windows go up and down freely, and the electric rear window works fine. Only other area that could be addressed is the rear taillights are intermittent, and I have not chased it down. You can fly in and drive it home. I kept it around to take it on the power tour this year, but family medical issues kept me home this year.
This is an excellent running and driving car, however in todays environment, I have to disclose that it is being sold as-is, where-is with all faults known or unknown. I have disclosed all I know that is correct or not in the listing, and this has been a personal car of mine to take to local car shows, ice cream with the family, and just enjoying it on nice days.
