1973 Dodge Charger, 2 Door Hardtop, originally 400 Motor 4 Speed Manual
1973 Dodge Charger 2 Door Hardtop originally 400 Motor 4 Speed Manual
1973 Dodge Charger, 2 door hardtop. Starts, runs, drives, stops. Take a look at the information below. I try and detail everything I can about the car; its condition and its history.
39,855 Miles
Originally a Green exterior with Green interior car. 400 Motor with a Heavy Duty 4 speed Manual Transmission.
Factory Tach.
VIN: WH23P3A151738
One of 244 built based on original motor and drive train.
I have the original bill of sale which will come with the car. It was purchased new on 12/28/1972 at Park Dodge in Patchogue NY. Also have the original warranty documentation and owner's manual.
Clear title in my name in hand.
I was able to connect with the first owner and get a history of the car.
He was an Engineer in the Navy and at the time was into drag racing. When he purchased the car it was his intent to race it. His plan was to drive the Charger until either the 1 year or 12,000 mile warranty was up and then modify for racing.
Once the warranty expired he had the car sent to Nicholas Engineering in Portland OR to have the transmission upgraded. Then to Jerry Ruth at Northwest Racing in Seattle WA to have custom fabricated Traction Bars installed (NHRA specs for D Mod in 1974) which gives the car a bit of a stiffer ride. Then sent to Keith Black to have the heads upgraded and finally to the Cope Brothers in Tacoma WA. to have the motor upgraded.
He raced it along the West coast in 1974 & 1975. He has logs and notebooks of his racing...times, places, distances, how he did, etc. I asked for the logs and notebooks as I thought it would be nice to have for the history of the car and he said he wanted to hold on to them.
1976 through '82 the car was in storage. He eventually relocated to Illinois and raced it again from approx. 1983 through '88. Car went back into storage again until 1990. Do have a couple trophies that were won and I will send them along with the car. One is from the US 30 Dragstrip in Hobart Illinois. The other I can't tell as the name on the trophy has worn off.
He sold the car in 1990 with just under 20K on the odometer. The 2nd owner drove the car for a couple years and then stored it away with the motor and trans removed which he eventually sold. In 2010 he wanted to get it running again and put in the 440 and 727 Torqueflight Automatic Transmission. I purchased the car in 2013.
As mentioned, the Charger is now powered by a Big Block 440. Date and stamp coded 3/4/75 4006620-440-2. Motor runs great.
New Edelbrock 750 cfm Carburetor.
The 727 Torqueflight Automatic Transmission has been rebuilt. New Kick Down Cable and Shift Cable.
New Ultra Cool Transmission Oil Cooler has been installed.
New B & M Sport Shifter.
Power Bulge Hood.
8 3/4 rear end. 742 third member. Brand New 3:55 Ring and Pinion Gearing and Seals from Dr. Diff.
I also have an extra 4:89 Ring and Pinion set and I will include them with the car also as they are in great shape. Also have a center shift console that I will include.
Has Sure Grip (POSI)
The original Clutch pedal is still in the car, so converting this back to a 4 speed will be that much easier!
Headlights (low and high beams) work, taillights work, brake lights work, turn signals work. All side marker lights work.
Wipers do not work, motor engages but wiper arms do not move. I have not hooked up the heater or radio either. None of these would be used by me...never drove in the rain or winter...so these items were not high on the priority list.
New BF Goodrich T/A 205/70/14 Tires on the front and BF Goodrich T/A 274/60/15 on the back. Rims are REAL Magnesium and were put on the car by the original owner when he bought it.
New Battery.
New Ignition Control module, coil, ignition wires. Automatic Choke.
New Belts.
New Headlight switch.
New Aluminum Performer 440 Intake Manifold. (have the original steel intake that will come with the car)
New MSD Pro-Billet Ready-to-Run Distributor, Magnetic Pickup, Vacuum Advance.
New chrome air cleaner.
New Billstein shocks on front and rear.
New Grant 502 Classic Series 9 Hole Cruising Steering Wheel. (have the original steering wheel and will come with the car)
Car came from the factory with high performance heavy duty breaking system. The system has been completely redone on all four corners. New oversized rear drums. New disc brakes on front, wheel bearings, wheel seals, calipers, pads, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, oil seals, etc.
No power steering originally, but does have a pully installed, could be hooked up if so desired.
Interior is in excellent shape. Newer carpet, still has original headliner, no sagging or bowing, it is in wonderful shape. Original package tray in great condition, has not been cut up or otherwise molested.
Seats were re-done. Original door panels and kick panels are in incredible shape and accounted for with no chalkiness and have been repainted to black. New dash pad. All ashtrays are there, lighter works.
Original radio.
120 MPH Rallye speedo dash.
Speedometer works, had a new speedometer cable installed as well. Had the whole gauge cluster restored.
Alternator gauge works. Oil and Temp Gauges work.
Fuel gauge works. Installed a new sending unit.
Factory Tach has been disabled as it needs the gearing updated so it can work with the new ignition system. Otherwise, I do have on order, and waiting for it to arrive, an adapter that will work and allow communication with the factory tach gearing. That will be included with the car if I don't get it in time to install before beforehand.
The paint job is OK. Done before I got the car. A very dark metallic gray. Looks black. Sparkles in the sun. Paint looks good from afar and not too bad up close. However there are some flaws. A couple chips in the paint here and there. I have included a couple pics showing the worst of these blemishes. This is not a $10,000 paint job or however much a top-notch paint job costs these days. It is driver quality and OK. Shouldn't be an embarrassment to anyone. The engine bay and trunk were not part of the newer paint job and still have the original green that came on the car.
Frame rails are in terrificshape and rust free.
The body is original, in great shape, no rust. Some dings here or there. There was some cosmetic repairs at the top of the A pillars at one time...please see included pics of this.
Antenna is missing.
All glass is original. Driver and Passenger windows roll up and down. 3/4 rear windows roll up and down as well.
Driver side mirror was missing, but I have purchased an OEM mirror that will come with the car if I don't get it installed in the meantime.
No rust in the floor pans.
No rust in the trunk. Do not have the spare tire. Do not have the trunk mat either or the divider. Does have air shock nozzles in the trunk if you ever wanted to switch over to air shocks.
If I were to keep the car, the next thing on my list to do, would be to insulate the trunk with dyno mat or lizard skin and put in a trunk divider with the jute backing. Given that there is no mat or sound deadening in the trunk, it is just a big hollow metal space that amplifies road and rear end noise.
I've really tried to be thorough and touch base on everything, however if I have overlooked something, please send me any questions you may have. I will do my best to answer them in a timely fashion. If you want additional or specific pictures, let me know. Is for sale privately as well, if you have a buy it now price in mind, please message me. Will sale outside the United States, please message me if this applies to you.
This is a rust free, low miles, low production car that is in good shape given its age. An honest car. Been driving it a lot lately and it turns lots of heads. People love it.
There are four pics at the end of the included pics that show the worst of the paint/trim imperfections. I have grouped like items together into a collage pic where possible and as you can see, pretty minor stuff. The value in this car is the low production number, low miles, race history and rust free body.
Not looking to sale because I have too many projects. Simply time to move on and use the money elsewhere...and get my garage back : )
Payment by check or money order...either will need to clear first, or wire transfer. No paypal.
Am more than happy to work with your shipper. If you'd like to come see the car or have someone check it out for you, simply message me.
There is no warranty included, expressed or implied. Vehicle is purchased as is.
