1986 Dodge Charger Shelby
Well….I can’t believe the time has come for me to sell my 1986 Shelby Charger. I bought this car back in Jan 2009 with the intention of building the most bad ass, street driven, stock appearing Shelby Charger out there. The car was originally from Arizona and was there most of its life until the owner I bought it from moved to North Carolina. The car was only in NC for 1-2 years and kept in a garage before I bought it. The car is 100% rust free.Once I got the car home, I enlisted Mike Demoss from Forward Motion to build my vision for the car. I wanted the car to be powerful (yet streetable) and look completely stock from the exterior. The vision started with the drivetrain and here is what we ended up with:
Engine
FM Enforcer 2 1989 Turbo 2 short block O-ringed, fitted with JE pistons, ARP main studs, ARP rod bolts, prepared T2 rods, oil pump and pan, file fit rings, balanced crank, block painted gloss black
FM Enforcer 2 cylinder head CNC ported assembly with +1mm stainless steel valves, springs, retainers, keepers, and vale seals. FM 475 Enforcer 1 camshaft, lifters, rocker arms, new exhaust manifold nuts and studs, 11mm head stud pkg for 2.2/2.5 SOHC
6262S Precision Turbo (good to 690 hp)
Ported intake manifold 1988 up, Max Flow
Max flow turbo header with external wastegate mount, Tial 38mm wastegate with flanges
58mm Throttle body with gasket; reconditioned
Big Stuff Gen 3 engine management system, complete with distributor, wiring harness and sensors
75lb/hr fuel injectors
FM Enforcer Turbo 2 fuel rail with gauge for use with 1 piece intake manifold
Weldon 600A fuel pump with -8an pickup and fuel line
Aeromotive adjustable fuel pressure regulator
24” long x 8” height x 3.5 thick intercooler
Universal polished aluminum intercooler tubing with coupler and clamps
4” intake setup with conical air filter
Tial 50mm blow off valve
Magnecor 8.5mm ignition wire set 81-90
Spark plug, NGK GR5

Transmission mount, heavy duty 1984-1989

1990 A-568 series transmission, rebuilt with 3.50 final ratio and OBX limited slip differential
Gator racing axle set with CV joints
Hurst shifter
Battery relocation kit
Radiator, 1989 Turbo 2 Daytona with updated core
16” Radiator Fan
AMS 500 boost controller
Knuckles and front brakes from 1990 Shelby Daytona VNT with 11” front rotors, new rotors, pads, wheels bearings, calipers
Rear disc brake setup from 1990 Shelby Daytona VNT with 11” vented brakes, emergency brake shoes, calipers, pads, rotors, and brake lines
BFG Rival radial 205/50-15 tires
The engine is managed via BigStuff3 so all tuning can be done with a laptop. I have not dyno’d the car but based on Forward Motion’s calculations, the car should put 400hp down to the wheels at 23psi. The car is very fast and light. Once the drivetrain was done, I turned my attention to the exterior of the car. Here is a list of things I did to the body:
Exterior
BCT Custom’s in Collegeville PA brought the car down to bare metal and completely repainted the entire car.
Paint was used to replace pin striping where possible
Shelby decals were replaced
Original wheels were polished
This was not your run of the mill paint job. It was done right and cost $5500.00. Once the exterior was finished, the last piece was the interior. Here is a list of items that was completed:
Interior
Installed roll cage (this was done prior to painting the car)
Installed Sparco racing seats
Had a custom interior shop install new carpets and headliner, build a new center console, remove rear seat and replace with custom carpet and build platform to cover rear seat area.
Installed 4 point racing harness
Installed Racepak UDX Display dash on custom made mount
The car came out really nice and I am very happy on how the project turned out. Since the car has been completed, I have put roughly 800 miles on the car. I mainly drove it to cars and coffee meet ups and when the weather was nice enough to drive it. I spared no expense on building this car as I wanted it done right from the start. When all said and done, I have 40k in receipts into this car, so you won’t be disappointed in it. Mike Demoss from Forward Motion knows this car very well, since he’s the one that did most of the work on the car. If you would like his take on the car, feel free to reach out to him. The only reason I am selling the car is to purchase something else that my wife and I can both enjoy and drive together. Let me know if you have any questions.
You can find a list of photos I have taken over the years of the car via the link below. The ones at the bottom are the most recent ones.
