1964 Dodge Power Wagon
1964 Dodge Power Wagon, Crew Cab, W200, 4X4, ¾ Ton. This truck is supposedly an ex-Air Force truck out of White Sands, New Mexico. She carries the 318 Polyhead motor of the day with the four speed manual (granny +3) transmission and divorced transfer case with 4.10/4.11 axles. The engine has been converted to an electronic ignition distributer and, if I remember correctly, the previous owner said he did the top end on it. Otherwise she is pretty much original. The transfer case and hubs work fine so she is 4X4 functional.
A previous owner was not happy with the six foot short bed that came on it so he cut two feet out of the front of the original bed and welded it to an eight foot bed giving this truck a ten foot bed (9 foot, 10 inches). The weld is NOT pretty. The frame was extended to allow the axles to align correctly. Paint: She is Air Force blue and the bed extension is green. All was painted over in white. The paint job was not a good one and the white is wearing off so the truck is white, green, blue, primer red and rust colored. The interior is painted brown. As you can see in the pictures, she is not a show truck. For all these reasons, my wife hates her. Therefore, I love her.
The air-gate has a hook for a set of folding stairs to attach to, so she is a hoot at the drive-in (yes, we have a great drive-in in Tulsa) and at the campground. I have a proper tail gate from a 61 model truck included. She has no power steering, no power brakes, no air-conditioning and no radio to speak of. She runs, she drives, she stops and on a rare occasion I can go around a corner without hitting anything. As long as she is, and without power steering, she can be a real beast to turn.
The only real quantity of through rust is in the aft lower corners of the front doors. See pictures. The glass is all good and the windows work, though there isn’t really any door or window seals left in her. The drivers door needs the hinges reworked as it has to be lifted to open/close properly.
All in all, a good running truck and highly functional. (If that’s not a subjective statement, I don’t know what is.) She is almost fifty two years old and showing 10,000 miles, which I assume to mean 110,000 miles. I drive her about thirty miles a week to keep the seals lubed and the battery up. Otherwise, this pet project sits around the house looking all lonely. I bought her thinking now that the last kid graduated high school I would miraculously have time and money on my hands. HAHAHAHAHAHA, I don’t care who you are, that there is funny. Anyway, four years later and the joke is still on me. No time. No money.
Want to buy a neat old truck? Bid! Buy it and no, I won’t ship it. You can arrange for shipping or pick it up here. If time is on my side, I may be able to drive it to you. We would have to work that out later… For a fee... Naturally.
