1978 Dodge D100 short box SWB original patina high desert survivor barn find NR
1978 Dodge Other Pickups
For sale: 1978 Dodge 1/2 ton short box survivor barn find truck with great patina. Nice, clean, straight and dry truck from the high desert of central Montana. Originally a US Government truck, for the last 30 years it's had two older owners that really cared for it, maintenance ledger included. All records including the original invoice from 1985 when the truck was purchased at government auction with low miles for $3,100. Factory slant 6/stick truck, 2nd owner had it professionally converted to V8/auto with rebuilt 318 engine. Runs strong and sounds throaty. Power steering. The truck has had a typical western life of fishing, hunting, and camping.I recently purchased from the 3rd owner who has owned it for 20 years. Truck has been in use right up till current time and not sitting fallow, runs and drives well and it's ready to go. Perfect for a hot rod hauler, shop truck, or for those runs to Home Depot and Steak and Shake with the wife. 1978 was a great year for Dodge trucks, and this truck has the desirable Lil Red Express grille style. It's hard to find any 70s short box pickup, let alone rust free. I'll do my best to describe the truck below:
Exterior: Original and really decent, straight and dry old rig. 99 percent rust free, in this arid country of sagebrush and prickly pear cactus, we get 10 inches of total moisture per year. We just don't see major rust or rot here. Only appreciable rust is small spot at very bottom of passenger front fender, a few small surface rust spots as shown on doors, box and tailgate.Original paint is faded to a perfect patina, nothing hidden with bondo or undercoat, what you see is what you get! A few dents here and there as shown in photos - nothing major. Chrome is good with no pitting. Glass is good, windshield has one large chip that's been filled. Undercarriage is original and super clean, original factory paint still on rear end and other components.
Interior: Original and good condition other than a splits shown on driver side of seat. No cracks in dash or door panels. Carpet was replaced by PO and any surface rust on floors was coated with inhibitor. Aftermarket stereo sounds great. Tach and vacuum gauge added as shown. Everything seems to work, other than needs heater control valve.
Mechanical: Starts, runs strong, and drives good. Truck has been well maintained and have records. 318 really moves this little truck out smartly! Engine has about 50k miles on rebuild, sounds throaty, nice dual exhaust system, no major leaks or smoke, ready to use. Tight and nice, truck has a total of 95k easy miles and is really a fun rig to drive. Slight lifter tick at startup when it sits a while, I've been driving it for a few days and haven't heard it now. Power steering works well. Seems pretty well sorted - truck was in use as a dump runner and occasional work commuter and was driven regularly. Tires have good tread but a few small weather cracks. A couple of minor things- needs heater control valve, manual valve has been installed temporarily. Passenger door lock sometimes sticks and you have to open with key.
Pricing/Misc: NO RESERVE. If you're tired of fluffed-up Ebay rust buckets, give this honest original survivor truck a serious look. Low cost shipping to is available andprobably less expensivethan fixing an East Coast or Midwest tetanus truck. This truck runs fine but I would not recommend flying in and driving it cross country, it's an old truck and stuff happens. Cell phone coverage is not great in this part of the country, and it's a long way between towns. Montana title is clear and open with no liens. Buyer should get insurance when funds are sent. Outdoor storage is available for 30 days, after that a $100 per month fee will be charged.
