This 1960 DeSoto was bought new by Lawrence Sullivan of Hermon, New York from Potsdam Motor Sales in Potsdam, New York. There are only 44,550 miles on the odometer and the car is practically all original. This car would make a very nice driver or with some cosmetic work a very nice show car.
After purchasing this car I did a tune up on the engine and got it running like new. New cap and rotor, points, wires, plugs, etc. The motor does not smoke, leak or have any irregular noises. This is probably the smoothest running engine I have ever seen. The car fires right up and idles as smooth as silk. The engine has great response and plenty of power. The Torqueflite transmission goes right into gear and drives nice and smooth down the road shifting into all gears as it should.I've driven the car quite a bit and haven't had any issues. The engine does not overheat or exhibit any issues.
The brakes were replaced several years ago and still function quite well and will stop the car quickly. The pedal has some softness and one drum seems to be slightly out of round which is noticeableat very low speeds when applying the brakes. I purchased a complete brake kit for the car. It includes everything needed to totally redo the brakes, bearings and seals. It will be included with the car.The car is riding on new wide white radials with very low miles with the original full wheelcovers.
The power steering is smooth and doesn't leak or make noises. The steering wheel is in remarkable shape. Normally these plastic wheels disintegrate in the sun but this one is intact and is very nice. All the lights work. The low beam headlights were replaced with new halogens units. All the gauges work and are accurate. The only think that doesn't work is the clock but I have not tried fixing it. The radio works well but the antenna is broken so its hard to pick up stations. Touch the antenna end with your finger and the reception is crystal clear!
The body is in nearly perfect condition. The car wears most of its original paint with a few areas showing some touch up in the past. There are some small nicks and scratches in various places but the car presents itself very well. A good buffing and the car would really shine. The only rust I noticed was on the Driver's side lower quarter where it curves under the car. It has some flaking and paint loss. The Passenger side show some similar issues but no holes seem present. The floors are in near perfect shape with no rot. Nice and solid! The trunk floor is very solid but the trunk weatherstrip channel was rusted in the rear as most 1960-1961 Chryslers and DeSotos are. The affected areas were cut out and new metal welded in. The weatherstrip channel and the trunk floor was then coated in POR15 paint. A new trunk seal was installed.
The chrome and stainless on this DeSoto is very nice. The plastic emblem on the hood is perfect. The grille is nearly flawless and all the trim shines nicely. The passenger side bumper guard is rusted on the bottom side but it is not visible unless you are under the car. Otherwise all the rest of the chrome and stainless is in outstanding condition. This car really shines in the sunlight!
The Interior is all original for the most part. The front seat cloth has come apart and would need replacing but all the vinyl appears to be nice and soft and could be reused. The seat cloth material is available from vintage auto fabric dealers. The rear seat is in great shape with no issues. The carpet is original and in very nice shape. The headliner and sunvisors were replaced at some point and look nice. It also appears that the dash pad was recovered as well some years ago. All the chrome window surrounds are nearly flawless. The dashboard is in nearly perfect shape as well. The front seat is a 6 way power seat. It functions as it should and moves in all positions.
The trunk has the original rubber trunk mat with some small tears but still in very good shape and not hard and brittle. The card trunk liner boards are all present as well. The original jack instruction sheet is still attached. The spare is an older bias ply. Original bumper jack and lug wrench are also with the car.
The car comes with the original owner's manual and radio schematicas well as an envelope of receipts of work done over the years. An original set of DeSoto aluminum keys in a Potsdam Motor Sales key wallet is included as well.
Clear NC title in my name.
