1977 Datsun Z-Series

I am selling another one-of-kind classic and timeless sports car from the collection of a local Birmingham collection. This is Alabama car that runs and drives fabulously! Extremely low mileage car with less than 4000mi showing on working and functional odo/spedometer. This car has been indoor climate controlled stored the bulk of its 40 year life span. It cranks and drives wonderfully. Fires instantly at the hit of the key. No issues at all with this timeless classic sports car! It features some fantastic upgrades - all of which are aimed at making this machine more sport oriented asthetically and to be a better all ‘round, modern day, daily driver. This example of one of Japan’s best exports - as it sits - is so reliable and dependable that it would be totally worthy and capable of making a coast to coast, cross country road trip.
No mechanical issues - engine, brakes, chassis, suspension, tires, wheels - whatsoever. Both the interior and exterior are impeccable.
This Z car is equipped with its original L28 spec, 2.8 liter, Bosche fuel injected, 150hp inline 6 cylinder motor. The L28 is considered top notch and bullet proof. This example is no different. Whisper quiet engine that idles and revs smooth and quickly with a quick stab on the pedal. Motor fires when cold with a just a few pumps on the accelator, or a momentary pull on the OEM “choke” knob located under left side of dash panel. After the engine reaches operating temperature, the motor fires instaneously. This is a beautiful feeling in any vintage early fuel injected or carb’d car. A full mechanical service was performed in 2020 when i began driving this car more frequently. The service and maintenance work was done simply as a preventive measure related to the car’s age. Not due to its mileage.
The smooth and horsepower laden engine is mated to an impressive 5 speed manual transmission that upshifts and downshifts with smooth precision. Hydraulic clutch pedal is smooth and consistent. A new master cylinder was installed in 2020.
This 2600lb early Nissan/Datsun classic drives tight and responsive. No rattles, squeeks, vibrations, or loose feel as is typically found in older sports cars of this era. Steering rack is tight and reacts at the slightest input from driver. All supension and steering bushings are fresh and deliver a firm but supple ride. Tire to body clearance at wheel well is ample in all driving scenarios and at full steering lock both directions. The fully adjustable sport, racing BC coil-over suspension is firm and smooth - no bottoming of shocks, or harsh ride whatsoever. The Datsun/Nissan Z cars were extremely lightweight and well balanced cars - this was the backbone of the Nissan engineering and design divsion when the 240 was originally concepted and targeted for racetrack duty.
I’ll descibe to the best of my ability every aspect of the condition/functions/appearance/and details of the EXTERIOR-INTERIOR/CABIN-CHASSIS/SUSPENSION-COSMETICS. EXTERIOR
This is an Alabama car since delivered from Japan. The body is completely rust free thanks to its indoor stored life and non coastal, lower humidity climate and no salt/snow roads.
The previous (original) owner had a sleek, more refined, and far cleaner looking wide body kit installed. This ground effects body kit was professionally installed (the fit and finish of all body lines and body panel gaps are clean and evenly gapped). In the early 2000’s the entire vehicle paint was strippped (due to sun kissed fading on horintal surfaces) and was resprayed in its original Copper Metallic (Bronze Orange Metallic) candy, tri coat color. Only solvent based PPG paints and materials were used and after the color base coats were applied the vehicle was liberally covered with multiple applications of PPG Concept 2020 clear. This beast shows no signs of color variance or fading whatsoever. This car maintains its brilliant and eye popping Metallic orange/bronze/copper appearance today. Driver side and passenger doors, hood, hatchback, windshield and rear glass sealing gaskets were removed and reinstalled when the car was being prepped, to prevent masking leaks or tape errors.
All glass is original and clean with no imperfections. No chips, cracks, haze, fog, wiper scrapes, whatsoever. All new glass and door gaskets/seals keep the cabin air and water tight. There are no water leaks, wind howl, or draftiness.
Doors, hatch, hood hinges are smooth with like-new action. Latches are secure with positive angagement and need no slamming. They close and release and like a modern car. All panel gaps are even and equal across all panels.
Headlight pockets feature perfectly clean, clear acrylic, leak free aerodynamic covers that contribute to a more agressive endurance race look. Headlights, turnsignals, marker lights, tail lights and brake lights work flawlessly and have clean, blemish free lenses.
Any age cracked, dry rotted, shrunken seals or mouldings were replaced during the 2020 service/upgrade or repaint process.
Both the fuel door, battery post access lid, and windshield washer tank hatch lid, opens, closes and latches perfectly.
INTERIOR/CABIN
Dash and Instruments.
Guage functionality - The following items are operational and totally functional - Odometer and Speedomter, Water Temp and Oil Pressure Gauge / Seat Belt reminder momentary warning/reminder indicator lights up as intended upon crank up. Cigeratte lighter works. The hazard light flasher switch works and activates the exterior hazard lamps, but the in-dash indictators do not flash.
Headlights and running light switch on left stalk both work as intended. Horn works. AC and heat blower motor works
The following items might needs addressing - The trip reset knob needs lubing or adjusting. Left turnsignal indicator bulb within speedometer on dash is inop - probably just the bulb in dash. Wiper motor and switch is functional - all switching functions on stalk works as intended but the wiper motor itself runs a bit more slowly than designed.
OEM power antennae retractor/extender motor and toggle switch work as normal.

This Z has its original headliner, original door panels, sun visors, and the original crack free, blemish free dash - no discoloration or fading of any sort. Glove box opens, closes, latches as new. The original gear shift knob remains. Seats have been custom upholstered with black glove leather and red accent stitching. Comfortable and super safe 4 point racing harnesses are on both seats. Seat sliders are fully functional. Center console located emergency/parking brake lever is smooth and functional with positive ratchet engagement and has working thumb push button release. Parking brake indicator switch sticks at times which is indicated on dash. the park brake cable either needs adjusting or the switch itself is intermittantly bad.
Window cranks are smooth and effortless rolling up and/or down with no drag, squeeking, popping or resistance in regulator whatsover. Totally quiet and easy. Rear glass features its working original defrost system.
Transmission tunnel mounted center console armrest, features two storage compartments, and include the OEM ashtray, which is clean and possibly never used. Both storage compartments have individual closing and latching lids.
Rear hatch and hood unlatches via pull cable. Spare tire, jack and tire tools remain and are stored in OEM pocket under carpet in hatch area.
This car has an aftermarket FM stereo with bluetoooth, located where the stock, but non-functional am/fm radio once resided. The bluetooth set up was added in 2017.
CHASSIS/SUSPENSION
Brakes - Pedal feel is progessive and linear. No mushyness, or notchy hydraulics. Wheels spin free and with no drag when brakes are released.Hard brake application from high speed
Enkei 16" cast alloy sport wheels are straight, true, and balanced and are fitted with like-new (90% tread wear remaining) Continental Conti Extreme Contact 205/50/16 tires.
Suspension was replaced 2017 with BC Racing - “BR Series” Coil Over Shocks that are fully adjustable.
ENGINE MECHANICAL
Coolant system is leak free and maintains proper temperature and engine cooling whether idling on summer days for extended times, or running at 100+ mph for miles on end. Thermostat, all coolant hoses, water pump and belts were replaced during its most recent service in 2020.
Oil/Oil Filter, air filter, plugs were replaced in 2022.
No engine oil leaks, no transmission leaks, no engine smoke. No coolant leaks internally or externally. No fuel leaks. No fumes.
Charging system works as intended and puts out 14.6 volts at idle. Premium Exide battery is 2 years old and installed during 2020 service. A maintainer trickle charger stays connected when not being driven.
Manual clutch is smooth and effortless during engagement and disengagement. Transmission shifts precisely and snicks effortlessly into gear up shifting and/or down shifting. I replaced the front brake/clutch master cylinder in 2020 and flushed/bled the entire hydraulic system.
This is an air conditioned car from the factory, but AC is non-functional at this time likely due to a bad compressor. I have not addressed this issue since ive owned the car.
I use only nonethanol fuel in this car.
