Description:
1974 Datsun Z-Series
This early 260 (small bumper) is a gem.I'm the second owner,I bought it in 2008 from a Dentist who lived in Walnut Creek California. He purchased it new from Fairfield Nissan in 1974.He always stored it in a garageI've kept it in my garage with a cover since I purchased it.It hasn't seen a drop of rain since it's been in my possession. When I purchased it the odometer was at 39,000 (now 44,748 miles) The previous owner claimed it was correct and considering the condition of the car I don't doubt it.Registration is up to date with the original blue and gold plates.California smog exempt.
It currently has an L-28 with a 5 speed. However, I have the original (presumably) low mileage L-26 and the stock 4 speed in my shop. From what the previous owner told me he wanted the bigger mill and the 5-speed from the 280.Of note: Back in the day, You could buy low mileage z-car engines direct from Japan. Something to do with the emission rules there. Swapping an L-24 or L-26 for an L-28 and a 5-speed was a VERY popular thing to do.
It was painted in 2006 with the factory correct 302 paint code. Sans a few small imperfections it still looks good.I can't find any body rot on the car including the most common areas in the spare tire well, rocker panels, uni-body gunnels, battery compartment, floors, etc. Considering it was painted 13 years ago, You'd think it would be apparent by now.
My plan was to gift it to my daughter when she goes off to college this fall. However, considering college parking lots are notorious places for cars I just can't let this classic be subject to the abuse.
In preparation for the plan, I've replaced/ reconditioned, Within the past two years, (Most things more recently) not that they were bad per -se, I wanted the peace of mind.
Battery shut off switch which doubles a great anti-theft device.
Brand new tires
Brakes
All the fluids and filters changed.
It features a pair 1972 SU's carbs from Z-therapy. I have the stock 1974 flat top carbs and all the accessories stored in the shop.
It has a header with a new exhaust. Again, I have the stock exhaust manifold and exhaust gas recirculation (smog) parts on hand.
I had the radiator boiled out, changed the thermostat, fan belt, replaced the heater core, new hoses throughout.
I installed a new electronic distributor form a 280ZX, (I don't why you'd change it back, but have two of the stock 260 dizzies on hand) spark plugs, wires, coil, battery, light bulbs, Checked the charging system. The wiring harness is clean. So many older cars have had the wiring hacked up. Not this one, It's cherry.
Everything electrical works as they should including the power antenna, running lights, hazards, blinkers, wipers, heater. etc. With the exception of the clock (they never work) and the rear window defroster. The overhead dome light is missing the cover.Of note: I have lots of hard to find switches, relays and miscellaneous electrical parts for this car. All tested for viability before they were stored. (I included some of the spare parts in the pictures)
It has a c/d player, an amp with 6x9s in the back panel. I have 2 untouched back panels in my shop. The sound system sounds great.
The carpets are new with the addition of foil faced insulating/sound deading material below.
Some of the body rubber gaskets were changed. I have the remainder of the complete set, in the original packages in storage.
The door panels have never been cut, the windows and doors function perfectly. I might make a video of the door shutting. they are solid as can be with no rattles.
It does have a dash cover. If memory serves, it had a small crack in the center of the dash. I've only seen a handful of early Z's (out of hundreds) with a cherry dash pad. Plastic manufacturing back then was pretty pathetic.
It has the factory jack, wheel chock, and luggage straps.
Cloth car cover.
It still retains the factory engine splash pan.Which is also designed to keep the front end down at freeway speeds. Typically it's the first thing tossed by the owners.
I have a bunch of spare parts from my 38 years of Z ownership which I'd be happy to include in the sale:
Of course, Buyer is responsible for all shipping charges.
As mentioned above: the factory correct L-26 and 4 speed
Factory workshop manuals along with 4 other manuals that pertain to the car.
Two 5-speeds One from a very low mileage 1978 280-Z "barn find"
An R 200 rear end from the same 1978.
A steering column with ignition switch and keys
Pretty much all the stock engine parts were given to me by the previous owner for the 260.
3 really clean fenders. No rust, with the headlight buckets to match
A straight set of front aprons that were replaced by the ABS front spoiler.
Boxes of relays, modules, light fixtures, etc for the 1st generation Z
A set of armrests.
6 stock hubcaps.
a spare radiator.
a new set of window, door, and hood, etc. rubber gaskets.
2 quarter panel windows
a complete heater control panel
unscathed heater bezel
a clean combination switch, turn signal wiper, headlights
blower motor
a new pressure plate and clutch disc
an extra l-28 head
3 tail light panels
4 taillight lens units
front light markers with holders.
inside vents
glove box with a door
marker emblems from various years
hood hinges
a clean set of gauges for a 1978 They won't fit the early 260
