This Cord was built in the Spring of 1936 (between March 10 and May 21, 1936) in Auburn, Indiana. While the early history of this car is unknown, by 1961 it was living in Los Gatos, California. Purchased by the current owner in 1996, this car underwent a multi-year, frame-off, nut-and-bolt restoration of the highest caliber. Nearly all of the work was done personally by the owner, a meticulous restorer, who lavished thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars to make this Art Deco masterpiece one of the finest Cords available in the world today.
The body was removed from the frame, which was cleaned, blasted and fully refinished. The body was also fully disassembled, stripped to bare metal and repaired where needed. Wood was replaced, modern insulating material was added inside to deaden sound and keep heat away from the interior. The body was expertly painted in correct Cord "Rich Maroon" finish with urethane enamel. Many hours were spent wet sanding and hand buffing the car to a deep shine. Please see photos. All trim was polished and re-plated to show quality. The interior was fully restored in correct leather (an option on the 810 Westchesters) and personally sewn by the owner, using patterns from an original Westchester to insure the correct look and stitching. For touring safety, 3-point seat belts (lap and shoulder straps) were installed. All glass was replaced with correctly date-code-stamped panes. All rubber seals replaced. All gauges were restored and register accurately. Original Cord radio was restored and plays beautifully through the round Cord speaker, located above the windshield. Concealed headlight mechanisms were rebuilt and operate smoothly. Trunk was fully restored with correct lining and includes spare tire, Cord tools and jack.
Mechanically, nothing was left untouched to make this an exceptionally fine driving car. The original V8 engine and all components were fully rebuilt with performance upgrades added where needed, including: electric fuel pump and Richardson transmission. Vacuum/electric pre-selector shifting system was fully restored and works right. The front-wheel-drive axles were rebuilt to spec and operate as-new. New radiator and cooling system components. The brakes were correctly rebuilt and stop the car smooth and straight. The car has excellent power and performance. Cruises comfortably on the freeway and easily keeps up with modern traffic. Now showing just over 400 miles since restoration, this Cord is dialed-in and ready to show or go. The car carries a clear, State of Washington title in the owner's name. It it titled and registered with the engine number, FB 469.
The list of everything that was done in this restoration would take pages (and has been written by the owner), but suffice to say, EVERYTHING was touched, restored, or replaced to bring this car to better-than-showroom-new condition. A file of photos document all phases of the restoration.
Following the completion of the restoration in 2005, this Westchester received its certification from the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Club at the ACD Fall Meet in Auburn, Indiana. It carries certification #631813766. At that showing it also received a First Place Primary Award and the Bill Bocock Owner-Restoration Award. In the fall of 2005 at the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Eastern National Meet in Hershey, PA, this car received the AACA National First Place Junior Award. That year it also received the AACA National Award Nomination fro Oustanding Vehicle of 2005. In 2006 it received the AACA National First Place Senior badge at the National Meet in Sunnyvale, CA. It subsequently won numerous class awards at top-level shows including the Palo Alto (CA) Concours, and Forest Grove (OR) Concours. In 2015 this Cord received the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) Primary National First Place Award with 97.25/100 points. In 2017 it received the CCCA National Senior First Place Award at the Pacific NW Grand Classic, scoring 99 points; proving this restoration is in top condition today, as seen in the photos and video which were just taken for this listing.
There is little to add. If you want one of the finest restored Cords in the world today with an exceptional, award-winning pedigree, this is it.
Please see photos and video showing the car running and driving.
A realistic reserve has been placed on this car in keeping with its rarity and quality. It could not be restored to this level today for the reserve price. Please bid accordingly.
