1941 Plymouth Coupe Gasser
1941 Chrysler Coupe
1941 Plymouth P-12 coupe street gasser. I found this car in Kalispell, Montana about 7 years ago. It was a gutted roller and was originally set up as a straight axle gasser but the work was not done too well and was never completed. That is all the history I have of this car. In my hands, it was never built to race, but built simply as an accurate-as-possible 60's gasser for the street utilizing as many genuine vintage parts as possible (or as the budget would allow) The car was mechanically completely redone with most of the body and finish left unchanged leaving the patina as found. The only metal I replaced was front floors and trunk floor.CHASSIS / SUSPENSION:Original frame was boxed, sand blasted, and powder coated transparent gray to resemble bare steel. Front suspension is a late 40's Dodge 3/4 ton truck straight axle which has been drilled with 1" lightening holes. Front leaf springs were replaced with new ones and new gas shocks were added. The steering box is 48-52 Ford F1 vintage with steering stabilizer. Front brakes are converted to modern disc using a Scarebird kit. Rear end is a Mopar 8 3/4 posi with new leaf springs running 3.55 gears,1350 Spicer U-joints, gas shocks, drum brakes, custom built ladder bars and Competition Engineering floaters. I have a 1958 Pontiac 9.3" open rear end which was originally going to be rebuilt and installed in this car but was beyond my budget at the time of the build. I will include it with the car if the buyer wants it.ENGINE/TRANSEngine is a blown 1955 331ci Chrysler Hemi w/ 8:1 compression. Rebuilt in 2018 with nice original forged crank, forged I beam rods, forged pistons, ported/polished cast iron heads (original). Hot Heads stainless valves, hydraulic lifters, stock springs, stock rocker setup with re-enforced exhaust rocker arms. High-torque micro starter. Hot Heads spin-on oil filter adapter. Oil pan has been expanded to 7 qt capacity. Very nice set of NOS Chrysler Imperial bare-steel valve covers each with dual Moon breathers added. Hot Heads BB Chevy alum water pump conversion. Donovan alum valley cover. GMC 6/71 blower rebuilt by Jan-Cen Motorsports in Buffalo, NY with old-school 2" drive and 1/2" pitch pulleys. (running about 5-8 lbs boost). Dual Edelbrock 500 cfm carbs with K&N filters. Aluminum 3 core radiator with 16" elec. front-mounted aux cooling fan. Alternator is Mopar, ignition is a vintage Vertex magneto rebuilt by Magsarus Ignitions in Albany, NY. Exhaust is Hot Heads over-frame Willys headers routed through dual Spin-Tech 9000 series mufflers. Modified QTP 3" electric exhaust cut-outs dump wide open nice and loud yet run closed through mufflers at street legal noise level controlled with dash-mounted toggle switch. Transmission is a rebuilt early 60's Muncie M20 4 speed. Alum housing with cast iron mid-plate. Hot Heads trans-adapter kit and Lakewood scatter shield . Centerforce hydraulic clutch, Hurst VertiGate 4 spd shifter with line-lock switch.INTERIOR/EXTERIORSeats are real vintage bomber crew seats with custom leather seat cushions and mounted on slide adj. rails. RJS Racing lap seatbelts. 6 point roll cage, black diamond-tuck headliner. Bead-rolled aluminum interior panels. Firewall-mounted Sun tach transmitter (converted to 12v) with Sun 6000 rpm tach. All other gauges are vintage Stewart Warner with the exception of SW boost gauge which is new. Steering wheel is an old gold flake swap meet find. Horn is on a dash switch. Pedals are Moon (brake and clutch) with Ludwig Speed King bass drum kick pedal mounted for a gas pedal. All glass has been replaced with new and new seals installed.WHEELS/TIRESFront wheels are aluminum Real Rodder Wheels 15 x 3.5" with American Classic 5.60 R15 pie crust radials. Rear wheels are aluminum US Indy 15 x 10" with Towel City 10" blackwall pie crust radial slicks with tread grooves added. Tires all have great tread remaining and no dry-rot what-so-ever.ADDITIONAL FEATURESFront fenders and grill are original steel bolted together and mounted on a custom hinge set-up with gas struts to allow tilt of entire front body for a traditional gasser style. Works nicely and can be opened/closed by one person easily. Rear wheel arches are cut and rolled to closely follow the rear tire diameter. Fuel tank is trunk-mounted spun aluminum 16-gallon with internal mechanical sender and a Mr. Gasket electric fuel pump mounted under trunk floor on a frame crossmember. Battery is mounted in an enclosed aluminum box in the trunk with battery eliminator (off/on) switch mounted outside below the right tail light. Rear bumper is heavy-duty 3" tube, no front bumper. The artwork on the hood sides, lower fenders, and left rear end was added by a pin striper friend of mine a few years back, is very well done and adds a vintage feel for sure imo.COUPLE OF THINGS THE CAR NEEDSCould use a rebuild of the Ford steering box as there is a bit of play that I could never adjust out (kits are available). Oil pan gasket has a slow drip and needs replacing. A couple of gauges are not connected (oil temp and amperes, mounted on the lower dash panel) can be eliminated, just never got to it. There are 2 small rust thru holes (1 below each tail lamp) that could use repair (see pic). There are also 2 more, 1 on each side of lower front cowl that are hidden when front end is down, always on my list but never addressed. FYI....Be sure to look at pics the rear half of the right front fender as it was, at one time, damaged and appears to have been pounded back into shape with a ball peen hammer (or whatever). I always thought it added to the "dirty' badass look of the car so never changed it.Non refundable deposit of $500 due upon purchase. Full payment due within 7 days from purchase.
