LAST OF THE BIG BOYS, COLLECTOR-OWNED, 84K ACTUAL MILES, LOADED W/LUXURY!!
1978 Chrysler New Yorker
Massive '70s luxury cars are going to [literally] be the Next Big Thing in affordable collector cars. Car lovers old and new are discovering that there's really nothing else like a big, American luxury sedan with a massive engine, a basketball-court-sized interior, and enough trunk space to take your entire wardrobe with you on vacation. This incredible 1978 Chrysler New Yorker is the last of the truly mammoth Mopars and shows 84,342 original miles. It was originally ordered by a Chrysler district sales manager, and he obviously knew what he wanted; it's hard not to be impressed by its size and overall dignity. Styling is baroque, with a traditional chrome grille, massive bumpers fore and aft, and a padded roof, but those are all exactly the things you want on your '70s luxo-barge, right? The original white paint is in excellent condition, and it's a great color that doesn't scream "Disco era!" like so many other hues. There are no critical rust issues, no sign of accident damage, and it has lived a sheltered life, so it retains a soft shine that's representative of Chrysler's finest. Of note, the grille is metal, not plated plastic, the folding headlamps are fully functional, and the pillarless hardtop styling made the New Yorker Brougham truly stand out. This one wears legendary optional button-tufted white Corinthian leather that remains in excellent condition throughout. More like a living room on wheels, the sumptuous seats front and rear are as luxurious as any upscale men's club sofas, the deep pile carpeting keeps the interior hushed, and simulated Brazilian Rosewood does a better than average impersonation of the real stuff. Loaded with power options, all of which are fully functional, this is a gadget-lover's dream car. A/C, power windows, seats, and locks, cruise control, a tilt/telescope steering column, and a rear defroster make this car easy to drive and enjoy. The original radio was an AM/FM/8-track unit that's included in the trunk, but more contemporary music is piped in via an '80s Chrysler AM/FM/cassette head unit that fits quite neatly in the dash and looks OEM. There's even an ultra-rare sunroof, and even that works properly! Legroom is vast, and you'll be delighted by the way this car treats your guests. The fully upholstered trunk shows in like-new condition, with more plush carpets and a full-sized spare tire assembly.Chrysler's robust 440 cubic inch V8 was standard equipment on the New Yorker Brougham, and its bottomless reserves of torque are what make cars like this the Next Big Thing. Moving all that sheetmetal takes real muscle, but making it feel so effortless is the trick, and the 440 succeeds masterfully. It's clean and nicely maintained, with a lot of originality still intact, from the air cleaner to the chrome valve covers that show off that this isn't a garden-variety powerplant. There's a new alternator and ignition module, so it fires right up every time and the A/C has been converted to R134a so it's easy to service in the future. The chassis is extremely solid, which is critical given its uni-body construction, and the hardware is bulletproof: a TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission and a heavy-duty rear end. That hushed soundtrack comes from a recent exhaust system that does away with the catalytic converter, adding more than a few horsepower at the same time. Big 235/75/15 Michelin whitewalls have been recently installed, completing the luxury look.Nicely documented with books, manuals, and receipts, this is a great deal of sheetmetal for your dollar.
