There are so many hacked-up mid-year Corvettes out there with misguided attempts at modernization that this 1965 Corvette roadster stands out simply by virtue of its attention to detail. Of course. the thundering 502 cubic inch big block doesn't hurt. and it's got the performance hardware to put all that horsepower to use without diminishing the fantastic original look. It's expensive. but I guarantee you that there's way more cash tied up in the build. The brilliant House of Colors Candy Apple Red paint simply glows and the metallic in the finish highlights the dramatic shape of the '65 Corvette in a most spectacular fashion. Paint and bodywork are show quality throughout with no attempt at "perfect imperfection" but rather a super-clean and highly polished look. Panel gaps are tight and even. the hood and headlight doors sit flush. and you can see that the crease that runs around the perimeter of the car is sharp enough to give you a paper cut. Best of all. they didn't try to modernize the look with a non-stock hood or goofy graphics because. quite honestly. you're just not going to be able to build a car that's prettier than this. The side pipes definitely help with attitude and the lovely chrome bumpers were fully restored so they glitter against the luscious paint. At a glance. you might think the interior's been extensively modified. but look beyond the belts and harnesses and the custom steering wheel (which has an NOS horn button in the center) and you'll find more 1965 goodness. The black leather buckets are very close to being as the factory intended and there are recent door panels and fresh black carpets on the floor to complete the look. Original instruments were restored and calibrated to work with the crate motor under the hood and someone whipped up a very cool AM/FM/cassette stereo head unit that fits in the 'Vette's unique vertical slot. The chrome shifter looks correct but is now linked to a heavy-duty 5-speed manual gearbox. which completely transforms the vintage car into something that can be driven every day. Other goodies include a snug-fitting black vinyl top that looks like it's never been used and a modern tilt column that cleverly hides in plain sight. OK. OK. we're getting to the good stuff. The horsepower comes from a ZZ502 crate motor topped with a low-profile Offenhauser intake and dual quads. so it really makes a statement. With more than 500 horsepower on tap. it makes even the nastiest factory engine from 1965 look tame. and it's expertly built to be able to put it to good use. Dress-up parts include the beautiful aluminum valve covers and matching air cleaner. modern accessories. and lots of braided stainless. giving the whole engine bay a show-worthy look. A giant aluminum radiator keeps things cool without effort and Jet-Hot coated long-tube headers feed those glorious side pipes a big block symphony. A Borg Warner 5-speed manual gearbox feeds 3. 70 gears out back via heavy-duty U-joints and upgraded half-shafts. SSBC calipers and cross-drilled rotors keep things under control and QA1 shocks with composite leaf springs in the suspension give it the reflexes of a much younger machine. Torque Thrust wheels offer a traditional look with upgraded 205/55/16 front and 225/55/16 rear Nitto rubber for just the right look for a vintage 'Vette. Astoundingly well built. easy to drive. and insanely fast. this 1965 Corvette updates just about everything without losing any of the things that make mid-year Corvettes so wonderful.
