1966 Chevrolet C10 pickup, Fresh Build, No Reserve!!
1966 Chevrolet C-10
You are bidding on this beautiful freshly built 1966 Chevrolet C10 short box, fleet side, big back window pickup. When I began this build my goal was to keep the body just as Chevrolet had intended it to be. It’s not a frame dragging, fire breathing, tire smoking, stereo on wheels. I wanted the truck to be a reliable, smooth riding, nice handling, head turning testament to the quality of design that used to be prominent from Detroit, and I believe I have succeeded. The truck was initially stripped to its frame and then the frame was stripped. It was fitted with 2 ½” dropped spindles, power disc front brakes, new stock height front springs, a heavy-duty front sway bar, new suspension components, and power steering. Moving to the rear it was fitted with 4” dropped coil springs, a super Panhard bar (adjustable), and a rear shock relocating kit that moves the shocks to a more vertical attitude for a better ride. Of course it was fitted with new shocks all the way around. The rear brakes are all new drums, including every brake component along with the parking brakes. Even the wheel studs were replaced during the rear differential rebuild. Brake lines are all stainless steel. It is powered by a rebuilt (by the previous owner) 327 4bbl mated to a 700R4 overdrive transmission. The driveshaft was professionally shortened and dynamically balanced during the process. It is running a dual turbo type exhaust that emits a somewhat throaty exhaust note without being offensive or annoying. Perfect for cruising and hearing the stereo or conversations within the cab. To keep it running cool it has been fitted with a 3-core aluminum radiator and new fan shroud. I wanted the engine compartment to look like it just rolled off the assembly line (and yes, the greenish paint on the engine is correct for a 1966 C10 optioned with a 327) and other than the brake power booster (modern) I think it looks like it would have in 66.
All patches were scribe fitted, and butt welded, (no overlap patches). I had also noted some rust in the panels above the windshield, both inside and outside the cab. Subsequently the entire panels were replaced and in so doing, I elected to remove the outer roof panel, clean the cavity of the roof while it was open, prime, paint, and treat to sound deadener before fitting a new roof panel in place (130 rosette welds….its not a job for the timid). I also painted the inside of the replacement roof panel and treated it to sound deadener as well before welding it into place.
Inside the cab has been fitted with a fully rebuilt tilt steering column from a 1973 Chevy van (I wired the column mounted 4-way flasher switch to be functional), comfort grip steering wheel, restored original instruments (I had to convert the electronic speedometer output of the transmission to be cable operated), a three-point seatbelt system (two-point for the center belt), rebuilt heater with new blower motor, new wiper motor, a “Retro sound” stereo (stereo speakers are located within the dash at the original location), all new green tinted glass with Steele rubber seals, new fuel tank, and sound deadener throughout. The original seat was done in a tan houndstooth upholstery (made by USA1 Industries) after the seat frame and springs were striped and painted. The wiring is nearly all new and in in excellent condition (or it would not have been used).
I searched for months trying to find a rust and damage free hood…….to no avail. Ultimately, I purchased a new reproduction hood and found it to be excellent in every respect. The left front fender is also a reproduction. The bumpers are new as is the aluminum grille, headlight bezels, entire turn signal and taillight assembles, backup lights and trim work. The bed assembly is all new, every piece. All exposed nuts, bolts, and tailgate chains are stainless steel. Even the “Quiet Close” tailgate hinges are 316 stainless steel with Delrin trunnions. The pine bed wood was test fitted, block sanded, stained, and treated to 7 coats of “Minwax” Helmsman spar urethane, sanded between coats, both sides. It looks as good from under the truck as from above. The truck rolls on Cooper P255/70R15 Cobras mounted on the timeless powder coated GM style rally wheels, stainless trim rings and metal center caps (always one of my favorites). I have well over $30K in receipts that will accompany the truck.
When I started this build, I planned on keeping the truck as I am closer to 70 than to 60 and don’t know how many builds I have left in me. My last C10 build (seen here- https://www.volocars.com/vehicles/14967/1966-chevrolet-c10-custom ) was a stock build, a special truck as it was fully appointed with every factory option. I let that truck go at auction with mixed feelings, knowing that I could always build another…..not considering how quickly the years fly by. Now faced with a similar dilemma I take comfort in the fact that I am working on a 59 Chevy Napco in the west bay of my shop and it will be breathtaking when done. I may have to use a ladder to get in and out though. A law enforcement veteran of 35 years I have always valued my time in the shop to retain sanity while restoring trucks, cars, and old motorcycles. When I get close to finishing the Napco I will decide…..do I keep and enjoy it…or do I let it go and begin the hunt for a final 66 ….time will tell.
Not only do I welcome an on-site inspection, I encourage it. I have driven this truck for one mile, just to verify the transmission shifting points. It will still need a front and rearend alignment as I do not have an alignment machine. I have included some “build” pictures as well so that you can see what is not readily visible.
