1951 Chevrolet Other Pickups

General–Hi there, what we have here is a 1951 Chevrolet, 3600, flatbed. Yes, it has a clean title in my name and its properly notarized for transfer. This truck came out of the North Central Montana wheat farm/cattle ranch territory. The 1947 thru 1955 “Advanced Design” Chevys are among the most sought after of all collector pickups. However, any more these trucks pretty much fall into two categories: the first being a total basket case, beyond restoration, and good only for parts. The second category is one which is already restored and well beyond most budgets. This is the hard to find in between and is an excellent candidate for restoration,or hot rod. However, if the later are your intentions, I don’t want to hear about it.

Mechanical-The original engine is still in the truck, (see picture), and the oil looks good, no water in it; however, it does not turn over, but that often comes with time and a little Mystery Oil. The transmission, clutch, driveshaft, and differential are all present and I believe are original. Beyond this I just do not know, as I have obviously never driven the truck.

Exterior– (See pictures) Nice overall condition very little rust through (see pictures). Back in the day many Montana farmer/ranchers would buy a cab/chassis and then install their own custom built grain box, flatbed, water tanker, weed sprayer, wrecker, or whatever. When the old truck was set aside, the bed would then transfer to the next new truck. That seems to be the case with this little 51. In its present configuration you can go any direction you want. You could find used, or purchase new from a vendor such as LMC or Brothers, a pickup bed, or keep and or upgrade the flatbed with a nice oak or walnut floor. No matter whether restoration or hot rod is your goal, you are money and time ahead by starting with as solid and rust fee vehicle as you can possibly find. The truck does have two pretty beat up fenders and 72 years of dents, dings, cracks, welds, and poor paint, but these are all things a lot of guys are looking for in a restromod. The running boards are present and functionable. Only two windowpanes are even cracked. All tires hold air, and I have two additional wheels I will include for the buy it now price.

Interior– (See pictures). Not much to talk about here. The seat is original, or era correct and was recovered somewhere along the way. Or you can also have a pair of bucket seat I have, and you can adapt them, your choice, (see pictures). The floors are as nice as you will find, only two dime size rust throughs. The windows roll and the doors open and close nicely. All gages and instruments are present as are all switches and knobs. The keys are still in the ignition, which probably means it was running when parked. Neither the dash nor doors have been cut for a sound system or modified in any way. While cleaning the interior I discovered the three back in the day kerosene warning pots, (see picture), they are truly a piece of history and will go with the truck for the buy it now price. I also have an era correct radio which will go with the truck for the buy it now price. The interior of this truck is all there; if you are going for an original restoration - clean it, sand it, and paint it.If you are going for a hot rod, then you probably already have your own ideas.

Summary –The simplicity of an old pickup is what makes its restoration so popular and easy. This one would make a great project for a father and son/daughter, the guys in the shop, or whoever. The old truck deserves another chance in life to show up at your local car show, or for work with your business logo, race team, or cause on the doors.
