1980 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Landau

1980 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Landau 2 door Coupe

3.8 Litre 229 Cubic inch V6 engine, 3 speed automatic transmission

This car has only a few factory options which include: AM/FM radio, Power steering, power brakes, Air conditioning, and Left hand remote – right hand manual control sport mirrors.

have owned this car since the mid 90’s and at times it has been a fair weather daily driver off and on during that time. I drove it cross-country from Ohio to Arizona in 2011, when I moved to Tucson, with no issues. It has been garaged for most of the years I have owned it and currently is garaged. It had a dealer sticker on it when I bought it indicating it was sold new at Smedley’s Chevrolet in Vandalia, Ohio.

Car has had the following items replaced during my ownership: Gas tank, brake lines, pads and wheel cylinders, Master cylinder, wheels and tires, A/C compressor (switched to R134a at the time) heater motor and fan switch. All belts and upper/lower radiator hoses replaced as well. Car had a tune-up in 2011 before its trek to Arizona. A new battery was installed in May of 2022.

Additionally, in 2018 the rear main seal was replaced along with the fuel pump. It has seen little mileage since that time. The exhaust system was replaced sometime around 1999, at which time a dual outlet muffler/tailpipe unit for a Buick Grand National was used in place of the stock single outlet setup. The tires are about 23 years old but show little wear and no cracking. The tires are mounted on 15x7’” Older style Chevy Rally Wheels.

Within the past three months, the carburetor has been rebuilt, a new electric choke unit installed, a new EGR valve installed and the right-hand valve cover gasket has been replaced.

This car has also been fitted with a sequential turn signal setup, much like a current Mustang has.

Turning to the interior, the headliner, sun visors, rear side panels, rear package shelf, Dashboard, and door pull straps have all been replaced. The door panels have been re-dyed. Carpet and seat material is still original.

Exterior wise, the following has been done: The vinyl top has been replaced, the car was repainted in 2011 using basecoat/clear coat in 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Crystal Red. The striping was done in silver metallic. The rear wheel opening moldings were replaced, as were the chrome bumper strips front and rear. The Monte Carlo and Landau nameplates were restored at this time, and the grille was also restored.

This car runs well, with no problems. That said, it is a malaise era V6 so it is no musclecar. Everything works as it should except the radio, which currently is not functioning, and the Heater A/C switch is currently only working on the mid range speed. Upon checking the A/C it is fully charged but it does not seem to blow cold air.

There are a few areas that still need some attention. The worst being the left hand rear frame rail rust. The right side shows no problem. I have purchased the frame rail repair piece and it will go with the car. Driver’s headrest has a split and a tear in it, which I have not had recovered. The larger, full-length front bumper strip is starting to pull away from the bumper in one spot. The double-sided tape needs to be replaced on it. The rear side window seals are cracked at the base and at some point before I owned the car, someone used black silicone to try to repair one of them. The base of the windshield on the passenger side, was also “fixed” with black silicone prior to my ownership. None of these areas leak water in.

The original bumper jack and spare were missing when I bought this car so I have always had a four-way lug wrench and scissor jack instead. The spare is a 14” whitewall mounted on the only remaining original wheel. Also in the trunk is the original front bumper strip. It was replaced with a reproduction when the double sided tape let go.

This is a not a show car, it is a nice driver which I have maintained and restored as needed. The paint is not Barrett-Jackson perfect but is as nice as the original factory finish would have been. This is a car you can enjoy as is while you fix the few issues, or if you plan to swap in a V8, it is a car you won’t have to spend time and money on redoing the body and interior. I hate to see it go but I have run out of garage space and am downsizing my car collection.
