1990 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z
1990 Chevrolet IROC Camaro. Original 350 (5.7L) car, preferred equipment group #3. Overall amazing condition, the car gets A LOT of compliments, never smoked in, but not perfect, please read all the way to the end. 2 owner, I bought it from the original owner in the fall of 1997. At the time it had 34,130 miles and was completely stock except for 4 things: rear window louvers removed and windows tinted instead, aftermarket alarm, under coated by the first owner, and it had lots of custom pinstriping on it. It was his daily driver for about a year and half and then became a weekend toy. Car was originally white. G92 option (Borg-Warner 9 bolt, 3.27 posi rear end), dual cat exhaust, 4 wheel disc brakes with PBR rear calipers. Other than a 1LE this was the highest performing third gen Camaro.I used it daily, also for about a year and a half only doing some minor mods to the car. Then in the spring of 1999 it was involved in an accident. The driver door and front fender were side swiped when the car behind me decided to cross a double yellow line and pass me on the left just as I was starting a left turn. This was at approximately 56K miles. The left front wheel was cracked and just to be cautious even though there was no visible damage the front left lower A-arm, knuckle, and strut were replaced. There was no "frame" damage, no bending metal back into place, and the car aligned without issue. If there had been more serious damage I never would of turned the car into a toy at this point. So, while it was in the body shop a complete color change from white to black was done and the look updated to the 91-92 Z28 look. All parts used for the conversion are genuine GM parts and were all bought brand new which included the ground effects all around (front lip, rocker panels and door pieces, part between rear wheel opening and bumper, and the rear bumper), hood scoops, grill, and spoiler. The fender was replaced with a new genuine GM part and the door was a rust free junkyard door. Shortly after getting it back from the body shop is when the tires and wheels, brakes, and suspension mods were done so those parts have about 12K miles on them.
Engine mods started with bolt ons, then a complete top end, and I blew it up a couple times. The engine and transmission in their current state were last installed in 2007 and have 2152 miles on them. The only stock parts are the fuel rails, camshaft retainer plate, and some bolts. The engine is now a 383. It is not the original block since it cracked. So, the block is a 4 bolt main from an 89 Corvette, bored .030 over with torque plates, decked, clearanced for the longer stroke, and machined to clear tie-bar style lifters (all machine work done by SK Speed). Compression ratio is almost exactly 10 to 1. Eagle forged crankshaft, Eagle forged H-beam 6 inch connecting rods, SRP forged pistons, hand filed rings, Clevite 77 bearings and ARP hardware throughout, Moroso 6 quart oil pan, Milodon high volume oil pump, steel oil pump drive shaft, AFR aluminum cylinder heads with 2.02/1.60 valves, Comp Cams hydraulic roller camshaft 230/236 duration at .050, lift is right around .555 with Crane gold aluminum non-self aligning 1.6 full roller rockers, Crower tie-bar lifters (no more "spider" lifter retainer), 7/16" rocker arm studs, guide plates, aftermarket correct length pushrods, cast timing chain cover and aftermarket timing chain, TPIS mini ram intake, flow matched Bosch injectors (I think they were 30lb, been a while since I built it), 52mm ported throttle body, K+N air filters and baffles cut out of airbox, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, MSD spark plug wires, Accel Gen VII DFI with a wideband O2 sensor running in parallel to the stock computer, Accel dual sync distributor enabling sequential fuel injection instead of batch fire, Edelbrock headers with air injection pipes removed and Jet Hot coated, smog pump removed, EGR valve removed, ATI harmonic dampener, March underdrive pulleys, Edelbrock aluminum water pump, 160 degree thermostat, MSD 6AL ignition box, Hypertech fan switch, aftermarket flex plate, Powermaster starter with solenoid relocation, Random technology high flow dual cats, custom 3" exhaust done by Kooks headers when they were still on Long Island, over axle to a Y pipe how Borla did the 4th gen exhaust where the right side is open and the left goes through a 2 chamber Flowmaster muffler, and various dress up items. Car was professionally tuned, runs great, and made 335 rwhp, about 400 at the crank. I only took it to the dragstrip once but its best pass was 12.89 @ 110mph with a terrible 60 foot time. The idle is very choppy, it sounds absolutely amazing however there is an exhaust odor due to the overlap of the cam, and the car is LOUD. Just in case you missed that, IT IS LOUD!!!
The transmission is the one that came with the car and was fully built by FB (Fred Brown) Performance and shifts very firm. It has a deep, finned, cast aluminum pan and also an aluminum driveshaft. Torque converter is an 11 inch unit that stalls about 500rpms higher than stock. Engine and transmission mounts are polyurethane so they do transmit more vibrations. The rear end is stock. Chassis improvements are welded in subframe connectors and a 3 point strut tower brace.
Wheels are ROH Snypers, 17X9 with Sumitomo HTR Z II 275/40R17 tires all around. The brakes have cross drilled rotors from Powerstop all around and stainless hoses up front. Suspension all around is Eibach Pro springs which lowered the car slightly, Koni Sport adjustable shocks and struts, and polyurethane sway bar end links. Up front are Hotchkis tie rod sleeves. In the rear are Hotchkis trailing arms, Random Technology adjustable torque arm, and Granatelli adjustable panhard bar with spherical rod ends.
Interior is all original except for the floor mats and stereo installation. It is in amazing shape considering its age. The floor mats are genuine GM and the same part number that came with the car, only replaced years ago because the passenger side was cracking where the floor is not flat. No cracks in the dash pad, headliner is not sagging, the sun visor fabric is loose and the seat belt red buttons are faded. The stereo features a Pioneer head unit and 12 disc CD player, equalizer, MB Quart speakers with crossovers, two amps, and 12 inch subs. It sounded great back in the day but needs a refresh. The cones on the subs are completely disintegrated and the CD player only plays one side.
I do not have any of the original parts.
Ok, so the car is not perfect and needs a few things. First, tires. They are 24 years old. They will develop flat spots which when first driven in colder temperatures after sitting a while will shake the steering wheel quite badly at certain speeds. You need to step on the brakes very hard after the car is first started. I don't think the booster holds vacuum the way it should. The cooling fan runs continuously. I think the Hypertech fan switch is bad because if you unplug it the fan stops. I have a new one but never installed it. The paint could certainly use a good polishing/ paint correction to get rid of the swirl marks. When it was repainted it was wet sanded and polished so there is no orange peel which makes swirls more noticeable. But oh boy does it look great when it's clean and well maintained. The window tint is not in great shape. There is none on the driver window and it's peeling and bubbling on the passenger side and hatch. There are a couple issues from how the car flexes. There is a small crack in the roof at the top rear corner of the driver window approximately 1/4" long. Even though the gaps are good, the left rear corner of the hatch somehow rubs the quarter panel chipping the paint, and where the spoiler over hangs the quarter panels somehow that flexes enough to rub as well. There is a wind noise from near the triangular rubber piece by the driver side rear view mirror that has been there ever since the body shop. A rattle inside the exhaust somewhere near the cats, I think maybe something broke loose from a weld. There are scratches on the rear window frame from where the factory louvers mounted. The bottom of the doors rub the rocker panels close to the sill plates (inside). There is some minor corrosion of the wheels under the clear coat. A couple small cracks in the paint on the top of the front bumper near the hood. Unavoidable rock chips from normal driving and the ground effects behind the tires are a bit sand blasted. I'm being very particular here but I don't want any surprises. On the good side though there is no rust, no dents, no dings, no scratches. Car has been garaged it's entire life.
I have a clean title in hand. There is over 50K into the car and I have receipts for most of it. The car has been officially off the road for several years as life got in the way but I always try to drive it at least once a month and make sure it gets fully warmed up each time. Oil and filter were always changed at least once a year with Mobil 1 synthetic. It is not currently registered or insured so any test drives would be limited to me taking you for a ride around the neighborhood. I'm sure you can understand I don't want someone else wrapping it around a tree.
If your state still does tail pipe emissions testing it will NOT pass. Please understand that I have spent many late nights in the garage back when I built the car pouring my blood and sweat into it. Regardless of what the law may be in your state, you will waive that right and the car is not returnable for any reason. I promise to give you a good title but if you have any issues registering it because of emissions then you bought a vehicle for off road use only or a piece of art. I'm sure anyone can understand after how much I've cared for this car all these years there is no way I want somebody else abusing it for a week and then returning it because of a law. It is a hot rod. It is a toy. It has been heavily modified. I've had my fun with it but now it's time for someone else to enjoy it.
In person inspections are welcome and encouraged. Please ask all questions before bidding. The time to ask questions and inspect the car is before you buy it, not after. I've tried to describe everything as accurately as possible but please understand it has been over 15 years since I regularly worked on the car so any inaccuracies are purely accidental. Thanks for looking and good luck!
