This 1967 Chevrolet Corvette convertible was ordered on January 1, 1967 at Trulson Chevrolet Buick Motor Company in Anacortes, Washington, produced on March 17,1967 and delivered new on April 14, 1967. The first owner was a woman, she kept the car in near perfect condition during her ownership. The car was never raced and was sold with its original mileage and equipment at 56,630 miles (documented). The second owner, an avid collector and restorer purchased the car in 1989 and did a body-off restoration over a several year period. The car went through NCRS Judging three times scoring a high score of 98.66. It was purchased by the third owner in 1997 an NCRS Judge for Mid-Year Corvettes and in 2002 sold the car into the Otis Chandler’s Vintage Museum of Automotive Transportation. Otis Chandler died in February 2006. The car was sold in 2006 at the Gooding Auction of the Otis Chandler Museum Collection to the current owner who has retained it in his collection in Southern California ever since. The mileage currently sits at 58,640. The car has been driven on a regular basis around the block and serviced annually. It has always been in a climate controlled building with a cover.
The car is finished in Marlboro Maroon with a black soft top and auxiliary body-colored hardtop, and a black interior. Power is supplied by a numbers-matching L71 427ci/435hp Tri-Power V8 (L71) mated to a four-speed close ratio manual transmission (M21), special front & rear suspension (F41), with positraction rear end. Equipment includes 15″ rally wheels with nylon red-stripe radial tires, side-exit exhaust pipes, a transistor ignition system, tinted glass, AM/FM radio and headrest seats (A82).
All items are listed on original Tank Sticker and original order form and dealer invoice as well as the original Chevrolet “Corvette Order” Sheet on the car to dealer (matches tank sticker) and original Protect-O-Plate/Warranty Booklet in the first owners name included in the picture gallery. The first owner items also include a trade-in receipt, wheel trim instruction card, owner’s manual & plastic pouch & other miscellaneous repair receipts. The first owner, Cheerie Kernel sold the car to second owner Herm R. on 9-7-1989.
A partial restoration of the very original car was completed in 1991 and in October of that year it was entered into an NCRS Meet in Jenkintown, PA and scores 98.50 Top Flight. Jan 24th, 1992 the car is entered into Cypress Gardens Winter Regional and scores 98.66.
In July 1994, the car goes through a comprehensive body-off restoration by Jim Stuempfle (Level 5 NCRS Judge) of County Corvette, including an extensive engine overhaul by Harrison Racing. The engine specifications are all documented in a certified/notarized letter from Jim to the second owner. Special care was taken to preserve the original engine stamp/broach marks. A picture of the engine rebuild documentation is in the photo gallery (pic #753, 754 & 761).
Detailed records of the entire restoration process and all NCRS Judging Sheets are also included in the photo gallery.
The body was refinished in its original Marlboro Maroon during the second owners restoration. An affidavit from the body shop dated 4-5-91 speaks to the authentic original unmolested body panels - work performed to perfect the body and meticulous care in repainting the car to its factory specifications (affidavit pictured in photo gallery). The car was painted in lacquer and is crack & blemish free. It is simply stunning.
A quote from the affidavit states: “The entire body, including the original detachable hardtop, was stripped of its existing paint down to the bare fiberglass. The owner took several pictures to document this phase of the restoration, but I observed this particular to be quite original and was absolutely damage-free. In fact, the only reason for the repaint by the owner was that the original female owner had the car repainted once in the early 1970s. Since the paint was not original, the owner wanted it repainted to concours quality.” The owner of the shop, Gary Hunter, stated that they specialized in the painting of Corvettes (Hunter Collision, Norwood, PA). He went on to state “The proper Marlboro Maroon lacquer paint was applied to achieve the correct color, and also the correct metallic look and level of ‘orange peel’ that factor paint of that era had.”
I might add that this paint job is still applied to this automobile and is in concours condition. The car has been continuously stored indoors since this paint was applied and has less than 2000 miles of driving since that time. The car has always been covered. I have been detailing automotive finishes since I was ten years old in 1964. I recently spent two days detailing the car and can attest to the quality of this paint and body restoration. Additionally, I have spent over 20 years in NCRS and have been involved in judging various concourse events all around Southern California for over 25 years. I have personally owned over 20 mid-year Corvettes and this is one of the finest I have ever been around.
The third owner was Bill Hendry, an NCRS Judge in Southern CA and it received a Top Flight Award for a third time at the Mondovi Winery in October of 1997. In September of 2002 the car was sold to the Otis Chandler Vintage Museum. It was one of Otis Chandlers favorite muscle cars.
Features include a black vinyl convertible top, concealed headlights, split chrome bumperettes, fender vents, a striped stinger hood, and side-exit exhaust pipes.
Lug-mounted 15″ rally wheels wear Chevrolet center caps and are wrapped in 7.75-15 Coker redline “radial” tires. The car is equipped with manual brakes and four-wheel independent suspension.
The cabin features front bucket seats upholstered in black vinyl with a matching dash, door panels, and carpets. An analog clock (restored and working) is mounted in the center stack, and additional features include a glovebox, T-handle shifter, factory headrests, and a Delco AM/FM radio. The convertible top is a black Al Knoch reproduction top from the mid 90’s restoration and in #1 Condition. The interior is mostly original and in #1 condition. The dash was replaced during the body-off restoration.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline, and auxiliary gauges (all rebuilt during the 1994 restoration). The five-digit odometer indicates 58665 miles. Documentation of mileage is established in a long history of restoration and maintenance receipts, NCRS Judging Sheets and documentation from the purchase from the Otis Chandler Collection in 2006 at the Gooding Auction. Titles from each owner come with the documentation.
The 427ci L71 V8 features three two-barrel carburetors, a transistor ignition system, an orange block and valve covers, and was factory rated at 435 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
A photo of the engine stamping shows the sequenc, which matches the last six digits of the vehicle’s chassis number. The JE suffix corresponds with a 427ci/435hp V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The engine stamp clearly illustrates what factory broach-marks should look like on an OEM engine that came from the factory with the car. The motor was meticulously rebuilt by Harrison Racing in conjunction with County Corvette.
The Otis Chandler L71 - C2 convertible is offered in California with a 150-page plus meticulously organized album of all the documentation listed above and a clean California title.
The Corvette is a magnificent and accomplished example and probably one of the finest 67 Big Block L71 cars in the Country.
