While Chevrolets new 454 big-block engines may have grabbed headlines in 1970, the potent new LT-1 mill was also made available with the Corvette, delivering awesome performance with 370 factory-rated horsepower on tap. Based on a high-strength cylinder block with 4-bolt mains and forged internals, the LT-1 was built to perform with a hot solid-lifter valvetrain and breathed deeply with free-flowing cylinder heads and low-restriction intake and exhaust systems. Affectionately called the mouse that roared by none other than Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, the LT-1 delivered big-block performance with great handling by virtue of much lower weight and often slipped under the purview of increasingly watchful insurance companies on the lookout for big-block premiums. While lowered compression ratios brought gross horsepower ratings down to 330 HP by 1971, performance was essentially intact even with the switch to stricter SAE Net ratings for 1972; despite a new 255 HP rating for 72, performance was the same as it was in 1971. Just 1,741 of 27,004 Corvettes left the factory with LT-1 power for 1972 and today, these special cars rank among the most sought-after Corvettes of the early 1970s.
Unrestored and incredibly original, this 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe is a fully documented, award-winning example with the incredibly potent LT-1 350 CI V-8, confirmed by the all-important L serving as the 5th digit in the cars VIN. This car is also highly collectible as one of the last chrome bumper Corvettes before the advent of plastic-covered impact front bumpers in 1973. Colors are exceptional, comprising Code 973 Mille MIglia Red over Code 404 Black leather. A Muncie M21 Close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission delivers the LT-1s power to the road via a 3.70:1 rear axle and factory options include an AM/FM radio. Sold new at Sam Leman Chevrolet in Roanoke, Virginia on April 15, 1972, this rare LT-1 Corvette went on to earn accolades in top Corvette circles, including Bloomington Gold Survivor certification in 2015, NCRS Top Flight awards in 2015, 2017, and 2019, plus the Vette Vues Magazine Tri-Power Award in early 2019. Documents are exceptional, including the tank sticker, dealer invoice, Protect-O-Plate, and owners manual, plus dealer paperwork and ownership history. Not only one of the finest classic Corvettes in terms of performance, these fierce and balanced performers rank among the rarest and most collectible today. Contact us today and see it for yourself!
