1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z/28

If you grew up in the '80s, the IROC was the machine to own for prowling the streets looking for a race. Today, finding one in very clean condition that hasn't been pounded into the ground or questionably modified in someone's backyard is virtually impossible. Fortunately, this low-mileage 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z/28 is such a car. Featuring a spirited 5.0L V8 and 5-speed manual gear box, this car will help you relive the days when gas was well under $1.00 and horsepower was cheap.
Yes, a lot of these cars got horrible repaints in all sorts of silly colors, but the high-gloss black finish on this car looks just right, and that includes all the graphics, including the gold stripes and IROC-Z lettering that really make this T-top coupe pop. As a result, it looks exactly like it did in 1986 with the glossy paint shaving years off its age. Showing only minor signs of use and age that's mostly concentrated on the roof bar are near the T-tops. That's a common place for the paint to get a little dull, but it can easily be forgiven because the rest of the car looks so darn good. The paint is shiny and uniform, the clear is, well, clear, and it's obvious that previous owners have always treated this IROC like a treasured member of the family, only to be driven and enjoyed on weekends. Nevertheless, it won't be easy finding a nicer early IROC than this. All the cool factory body accents are in place, from the louvered hood scoops, the four accessory lights integrated into the front air dam, the ground effects that run the length of the lower body, and the built-in ducktail spoiler that surrounds the iconic taillights out back.
Inside, the car sports a tidy original interior that supports the mileage claims, making it one of the cleanest 3rd generation Camaros we've seen in a long time. The dark blue fabric is comfortable and perfect for cruising, and the two types of fabric used on the seats give them a very stylish look that works well even today. Original door panels remain in good condition and the trunk area wears the same dark carpets as the rest of the interior, all of which are in very good shape. IROCs typically came loaded with accessories and options, and this one includes power driver's seat, windows, locks, and mirrors, cold A/C that's been converted to R134a refrigerant, a tilt steering column, cruise control, and a rear defogger. It still carries its original AM/FM/cassette stereo system with a power antenna, plus a full complement of gauges, including the 85 MPH speedometer that was a part of the early production IROCS, before they switched to the 145 MPH units. Arguable the coolest part of the interior is housed in the center console: the 8-ball topped shifter that manages the quick-shifting 5-speed manual below.
1986 IROCs had a choice of engines, and this black beauty received the desirable LG4 5.0 liter V8. Electronic fuel injection was in its infancy and not very dependable, so this one was optioned with a factory 4-barrel up top, and it delivers great throttle response and impressive torque, and as history has shown it's reliable and tunable. It starts with a modest rumble from the original exhaust system, and idles like it has a bit of an attitude, although the LG4 camshaft was designed to make the engine as user-friendly as possible. It pulls hard, makes great V8 noises, and the 5-speed manual transmission is a perfect companion, with responsive power at every gear. Out back there's a 10-bolt rear end with a friendly gear ratio, making this an extremely capable high-speed cruiser that pulls down relatively decent fuel economy, especially for a modern muscle car. The IROC's handling is impeccable for the era, the chassis is incredibly solid and clean, and it wears fat Goodyear Eagle GTII 245/50/16 tires on the original gold IROC alloys, which remain in excellent condition.
Go ahead, try to find a nicer, unmolested, unabused IROC Z/28. Or you can simply give us a call and take this one home today!
