1972 Chevrolet Corvette Prostreet
This 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Prostreet might be the coolest high-powered C3 we've featured at Streetside Classics in a long time. And even though it has a very dramatic curb appeal, just looking at it doesn't tell the whole story, because this baby is packed to the Sting-Ray gills with performance upgrades. This is definitely a piece of legendary vintage fiberglass that'll show its taillights to some pretty ferocious hardware, even today. Can a Corvette be improved from stock? You bet!A '72 Corvette chrome-bumper coupe is nothing overly unique or special, right? Sure, they have that timeless Stingray look, but they've become so ubiquitous that they almost go unnoticed. And I'm quite sure that was on the drawing boards when this beauty was being restored, because the builders did just about everything they could to ensure this Prostreet stands out from the crowd. Painting it Bright White Metallic with embedded pearl white and gold ghost flames certainly helps, giving it an elegant, attention-grabbing look that is just different enough to stand out but not send up any red flags about the performance lurking underneath. The cowl hood is a custom piece that allows that huge motor and blower to stick out and breathe easy, the side exit exhaust that dumps behind the doors is super aggressive, and the HUGE narrowed and tubbed rear end allows for those GIANT Mickey Thompson rubbers and Centerline rims to set the pouncing rake that make this 'Vette look like it's going 100MPH while standing still. Bodywork was nicely done just a few years back (there's only 613 miles on the build) and looks very good still today with only a few signs of use, with great shut lines and a modern urethane shine on that slick custom white paint. If we'd have to guess, this was likely a very high-dollar paint job when it was applied, because it still looks so darn good today. Chrome bumpers give the Corvette a classic sports car look and with the factory trim still in place, the brightwork sparkles against the high-impact bodywork. There's absolutely nothing on the exterior that wasn't tweaked, upgraded, or polished to a high shine during the restoration, and it's all holding up very well. And yes, those are T-tops, so get ready for some open-air fun in this Prostreet beauty.
The interior does a great job matching the exterior's performance flash, with choice upgrades throughout the cabin. The black vinyl upholstery is a great choice with the bright white bodywork, suggesting someone with excellent taste was picking the colors. All the soft parts are nice shape, including the buckets equipped with Simpson harness seatbelts, plush black carpets and mats, factory door panels, and the original dash pad, so it all looks uniform and everything matches nicely. A full array of AutoMeter gauges are ahead of the driver and in the center stack, and along with all those red toggles and switches it feels like the cockpit of a jet fighter inside. And quite frankly, once you rev up the motor and watch the RPM's rise on the tach, it sounds like one, too. This C3 is also equipped with a tilt/telescopic wheel, a Comp Hurst shifter in the custom center console that manages the automatic transmission below, along with a heavy-duty 4-point roll cage inside that stiffens the body and makes this Corvette racetrack ready. And with T-tops, the open-air experience is quick and easy.
If you're trying to figure out what all the ruckus is about, you'll quickly get the picture when you open the rear-lift hood and find a thundering 509 V8 Dart big block that grunts out HUGE horsepower thanks to the giant Weiand 6-71 supercharger perched up top. Finished in more polished aluminum bits than you'll find at a Goodguys show, it's a street-legal piece that thinks it was built for the track. There's a pair of Holley 850 4-barrel carbs on top, long-tube Hooker headers, and an Mallory ignition in addition to all the stout goodies inside. The reinforced chassis carries coilovers and tubular A-arms up front, coilovers outback along with a back-halved tub and 4-link set-up that carries a narrowed Ford 9-inch rear end with 4.10 gears inside, so nobody can accuse this of being a race-only piece. Power disc brakes with drilled and slotted rotors live at all four corners and the full stainless exhaust system sounds simply spectacular. Rolling stock consists of Centerline wheels with a classic big-and-little set-up that features 33x21.5x15 Mickey Thompson rears tires out back that set the aggressive stance.
Brutally fast and supremely agile, this is the Corvette GM would have built with unlimited funds. With a huge Dart big block motor, build transmission, and high-quality workmanship throughout, this is a car you can drive and show with pride. Call today!
