Crisply styled, powered by a new overhead-valve V-8 motor, and with 12-volt electrics at last, the '55 Chevys came in 14 solid tones and 21 combinations. Mechanically, every shortcoming of the stodgy 1949-54 line had been addressed - and solved - by Ed Cole and his design crew. The result was a pop-culture bull's-eye.
There were three models of '55 Chevrolet, the 150, 210 and Bel Air, available in coupes, sedans, convertibles and wagons, including the iconic Nomad. The car on offer is an example of the purposeful single-color 150 two-door sedan, strikingly presented and with a wonderful history.
the new 265-cubic inch "small block" V-8 and with a three-speed transmission, the Skyline Blue car was bought new by Carl Elkins in Rogersville, Tennessee. The next owner was Mary Ellen Merriman of Mooresville, Indiana, who kept it proudly from 1959-1986. Numerous documents and inspection stickers accompany the car from that period.
When Bill Jacobs acquired it in 2005, it indicated only 39,026 miles, and he embarked on a frame-off restoration. About that time, he discovered that GM's museum had a similar stock car in the same color, so he replicated that vehicle, with Jacobs dealership-related graphics and the number "55," a reference to the year 1955 when Bill's father started their first Chevrolet dealership in Joliet, Illinois. A charming example of the model, the car has scored 929 points in Classic Chevy judging and is featured in the book Classic Chevy World.
