This is one of those stories that sounds too good to be true. We bought this car in 1990 from the 77 year old original owner. Some of the things about this car are things you never see. For example, the seat belts are the original seat belts, and are perfect. They look like they've never been touched. It still has the original carpet, and is nearly perfect. Even the floor mats themselves are in excellent condition, with the exception of the driver's showing a little wear. All four positions of the carpet are in great condition. The headliner is the original headliner from 1972 and is flawless. The door panels are the original ones, and with the exception of the arm rest on the driver's side, nearly flawless. The dash pad is the original pad in perfect condition. The package tray has been replaced, and it has the original speaker grilles in place. Visors are original. Sill plates are original. Kick panels are original. Front and rear seats have brand new seat covers on them, but even the original ones weren't all that bad. We just wanted them to be flawless. All the window cranks, door handles, small bits and pieces are all original. Even the glass is pristine and original, with the exception of the windshield, which was replaced. And the most unbelievable part about all of it is the weatherstripping. We tore this car apart in 1990 and did a partial restore. When we did, we very carefully removed every single piece of weatherstripping and was able to salvage all of it, and put it all back on the car. The weatherstripping is beautiful, and original, with the exception of a small spot on the driver's door near the latch. The trunk weatherstrip was replaced, and the trunk floor was re-spatter painted.
The car had very little rust, and it has been 30 years since we did the work, so many of the small details of the body work are a bit fuzzy. We are a professional restoration shop, 40 years and still going. And we have done scores and scores of restorations, so some things tend to just blend in with the others. There was some welding done in the floor boards in the front, it was small and only where the two floors met under the feet where they seam together. Only one layer of the seam was bad, and replaced, relatively minor repairs done right. There was no rust in the floors other than that, no rust in the rocker panels, no rust in the doors that I can remember. Although there was some rust in the bottom of the front fenders, it was repaired correctly and has lasted all these years, and is still perfect. The rear quarters had also a very small amount of rust under the chrome. We bought patch panels, and only used the smallest amount we needed to repair those sections. Fully welded, done right, and still looks perfect. Even the bumpers are the original bumpers to the car, and are in excellent condition. Every piece of chrome with the exception of the wheel well opening mouldings is original.
After several years of driving the car in it's totally stock condition, which was a Malibu with a 350 two barrel, turbo 350, and a single trac 10 bolt, we decided to make the car a little more fun and installed a moderately built big block, turbo 400, TCI converter, 12 bolt, posi 331 gear, all professionallydone in house by people with many years of experience. The engine is a very dependable square port 454, KB pistons, fully balanced, 10.2 to 1 compression, runs on pump gas, starts every time with no problems, idles perfectly, has never given us any issues as far as performance or dependability. Has absolutely no leaks, and is extremely powerful. The motor makes approx 654 horsepower, and is still perfectly driveable in traffic, on the highway, never overheats, and is very low maintenance. More details can be provided about engine, transmission, drive train if a person is willing to call and ask those questions.
Under the hood, if you look you can see that everything to do with the A/C is original, with the exception of a replacement compressor. All of the A/C lines and fittings, including the coil and POA valve are original, and the A/C works great. All the brackets and pieces for the alternator, power steering, etc for the big block changeover are original GM part numbers. The shroud is an original big block Chevelle shroud, along with all the pulleys and other accessories. The square port heads are rebuilt L88 427 heads. The intake is a Victor Jr, and the carb is a Holley HP carb. The idle characteristicsof these carbs are a miracle to say the least, not to mention the power that is gained. The cam is a solid roller magnum version made by Comp Cams, designed for street cars that require a quiet valve train. These cams can be set as tight as .015, and we have been doing it this way for 25 years and have no problems with noise or other issues. Motor and transmission have less than 500 miles on them, and are fresh.
Other things that are original are the grille, tail lights, side marker lights, deck lid, and all the other panels with the exception of the left front fender and the hood. We don't remember why we replaced the fender. And the hood is a quality replacement cowl induction hood. We still have the original hood if the buyer wants it. The cowl induction hood works perfectly, and looks great. If you have any questions about these details regarding the hood, body just call us.
