Description:
1984 Chevrolet Suburban K20
The time has come to say goodbye to my trusty old Suburban. I bought it off ebay back in December 2006, and it's served me well since then. There are two main reasons that it's time to sell. One, it needs an expensive exhaust system for inspection, and two, the rust has gotten to the point where it really needs to be addressed while the truck is still saveable. I have the skills and equipment to do that, but not the time or desire. You wouldn't know it by looking at the pictures, but the Suburban has seen very little salt in it's lifetime, so the underside and all the body mounts are still in great shape. I believe the cause of the rust was sand from being used off road in California by it's original owner. I washed loads of damp sand out of the lower body panels when I first got it, but by then it was too late. as the process had already started. It's going to need quarters, inner and outer rockers, and patches on lots of other spots. I'll try to get additional pics of all the problem areas posted by Tuesday. The Suburban has been my main transportation since I bought it, though I usually have a winter beater to drive when it's really cold out or the roads are salted. It's been very reliable during that time and has only left me sitting on the side of the road once, and that was just recently with a bad brake hose that was dragging the right front brake. The 6.2 Diesel runs very good, but it's no powerhouse. Anyone not familiar with this engine should do some research on it before bidding. It's not in the same league with the 5.9 Cummins or 6.9 Ford of the late 80's. It's smoother and quieter than those, but only puts out 130 HP. The engine is a Goodwrench replacement, and I have no info on when it was installed in the truck or how many miles are on it. I do know that the previous owner had the trans rebuilt at 156K. It has the 700R4 and 3.73 gears, so it's not too bad on the highway. It's happiest at 60 MPH, but does fine at 65. It does have a slight driveshaft vibration at 65, and probably needs balancing. Highway fuel economy is excellent at 23 MPG. I've driven it on lots of long trips: Maine, Chicago, Wichita, Knoxville, Cleveland, and just recently, all the way down to Miami and back. It will tow a car trailer, but you need to be easy on it and not in a hurry.
As you can see, it's a loaded Silverado. Most of the accessories work, but there are a few that don't. The A/C works, both front and rear. It's charged with Johnson's Freeze 12, so it's not as cold as R-12 would be, but it gets the job done. The cruise control does not work. Currently, the passenger front window doesn't work, but I have a new motor for it and will try to replace that before the auction ends. The driver side rear window has never worked since i got it. All the basics work: lights, horn, wipers, etc. The 4WD works, though it's always been finicky going in and out of 4WD. It has a factory locker in the rear. The rear itself is a bit noisy on deceleration. It's been like that since i got it. One of the side adjusters had backed off and the gears got a bad pattern on them. I tightened the adjuster, which improved things quite a bit, but not all the way. It's quiet under load and cruise, so I've never bothered going any further with it. When I first got the truck I replaced the ball joints, front axle u-joints, axle seals, calipers, rotors, brake hoses, and fan clutch. It just got new brake hoses again, and I've also replaced the master cylinder, wheel cylinders, rubber fuel lines, mechanical fuel pump, fuel filter, injector return lines, and both batteries are fairly new. It does have a crack in the windshield, up in the right corner, in the shaded area.
I plan to try and make a video of it running, along with a short road test. I'll try to get that up on YouTube in the next day or two, and I'll link it here. I also want to get some better pics of the underside. I was loosing light outside when I took the photos tonight. If anyone wants to see it in person before bidding, that's fine with me. It will be here in Dublin, PA. Monday through Wednesday, then I'm driving it to Carlisle, PA. for the Mopar nationals Thursday through Saturday evening, then back to Dublin.
Now for the legal mumbo jumbo. As expected, the truck is being sold as-is with no warranty. Buyer is responsible for transportation from Dublin, PA. to their location. A $250 non-refundable deposit is due within 48 hours of the end of the auction, with the balance due within 7 days of the end of the auction. I'm pretty flexible on how you pay the balance: cash in person, bank transfer, paypal is fine, and checks are ok too, just they have to clear before the vehicle will be released. If you need to use a shipper, that's ok. If you want to fly in and drive home, I can do that too. Regional rail from Philadelphia International will bring you 10 minutes from my house and I can pick you up at the Chalfont station.
I also wanted to say that this auction will be run old school. It will run till it ends on Sunday night. There will be no off-auction deals, no "for sale locally" cancelations and none of my buddies will be bidding up the price. I got my money's worth out of the truck, and if I only get a grand for it, then that's how it will go. Happy bidding!
Note: The trailer brake controller and EZ Pass are not included in the sale of this vehicle.
I uploaded 48 pictures to my Photobucket account. Once you get there, click on "view as slide show". That will be the most painless way to look at the pictures. It works best if you find something else to do for five minutes as it scrolls through the photos, as the second time around there's way less lag time between each picture.

I attempted to make a video this afternoon, but my old digital camera wasn't up to the task. I will try again tomorrow using my cell phone instead.
Ok, here it is. After much trial an error, I finally have an acceptable video up on YouTube. It's not the greatest, but you can see it running and go for a short ride.
