1955 Chevrolet Pickup With Classic Full Back Wrap Around Window-Great Condition
1955 Chevrolet Other Pickups
Up for auction is a wonderful 1955 Chevrolet Pickup with the classic full wrap around back window. The pickup passed my local licensing requirements and is operational. It comes with a clear Utah title and standard truck cover.Depending on your preferences, it could be used now for your day to day needs or be the solid foundation for your own one-of-a-kind classic restoration project.
A Chevrolet 350 V8 small block with Edelbrock intake manifold, Rochester Quadrajet 4 barrel carburetor (with electric choke) and oversized radiator have been added. It has a 4 speed (very low first gear) manual transmission. The engine starts and runs with plenty of power. The clutch is strong, and the transmission shifts cleanly through its gears. The engine oil, filter, radiator fluid, air filter, and spark plugs have been replaced. It has (4) P225/75/R15 Goodyear Wrangler GS-A tires on the traditional rims of its era with 50% tread left.
In trying to find the desired type, condition, and pickup year, it took a locater service two years to find the right pickup that would become a wonderful father and son project, which was enjoyed for many years. It is time for this classic pickup to find its new home. As with any project, there are things that have been completed, things that are in process, and things that still need to be done. With regard to all three, the following is an overview of those things I remember.
Frame and suspension: All the body parts were removed. The frame was sand blasted and powder coated. The suspension and steering parts were inspected and serviced/replaced where needed. New brake pads and brake lines were added, bearings inspected and serviced/replaced where needed. The body parts were reattached with new high quality steel fasteners so the truck could be operational during our project.
Engine/Drivetrain: The engine starts, idles, and runs great. The transmission, differential, and driveline were inspected and serviced where needed. A parking brake cable still needs to be installed.
Electronics: New wiring was installed during the frame restoration. All the lights and gauges on the instruments cluster now work, except the speedometer, which needs a new cable. Headlights, blinkers, cluster dimer, high/low beam and wipers are now functional, but the cigarette lighter (lighter fine, needs power) and the cab overhead light still need to be addressed.
Radio/Sound: It has the original radio and is one of those needs to be done items. The knobs turn freely and move the station indicator. However, there is no power, antenna, or speakers.
Environmental: The heater core has not been removed and inspected, so the heater hoses have been bypassed for now. I can get the heater motor to blow, and most of the levels and vent pulls to move.
Engine Bay: The engine bay is in excellent condition (see photos). The firewall is very clean and rust free (this was an important requirement for me). Both inner fender walls and hood latch panel were replaced when the body was reassembled. The hood springs are showing their age. They will hold the hood open, but at a bit lower angle.
Body: Overall, the body is in solid condition. While the body has some surface rust, I have only found isolated areas where rust will require patch panels. These are in the traditional areas (cab corners, and door steps). There are also small holes from rust in the bed walls and others that were drilled in various locations over the years for racks, lights, and other things that will be easy to weld. There is a dent on the back driver’s side and some previous bondo work on the passage door that will need to be addressed. The floorboards are in ideal condition with only minimal surface oxidation. I have tried to show all of the areas that I am aware of in the photographs. Photographs are of the actual pickup you are bidding on.
Cab: The dashboard and glovebox are in great shape, but the top trim piece next to the windshield is missing. The front window is in good condition, and the back window has been replaced with new glass. Both the driver and passenger windows are showing their age and have small imperfections. They gently operate, but were on the list to be replaced along with the door seals.
As mentioned above, we first removed the body so that the frame, suspension, etc. could be worked on and then reassembled it. This was done so we could enjoy driving the pickup as we worked on it. It allowed us to get a feel for its character, and let us think about which direction we wanted to take its restoration (modern or traditional). Even in its current condition, it would still turn heads and get wonderful comments.
