Description:
1971 Chevrolet Corvette
Why buy a rusted out Camaro body for thousands of dollars when you can have this Corvette Stingray restomod that has a rust-free frame, 4 wheel independent suspension, factory 4 wheel disc brakes, and a LT1 350 with a Tremec T56 6 speed? This is a great project for someone who has the time to finish it.We simply don't. Too busy with work and so after 4 years of ownership and fun, we need to pass this one along to someone with the time!
This steel bumper Corvette was a 4 speed/AC equipped car from the factory and has an LT1 hood. Since it did not have a motor or transmission when we bought it (no numbers to match here) we decided to build a restomod using a LT1 350 and a T56 transmission out of our 1994 Camaro SS.
The original frame under the Vette was rusted so we replaced it with a rust free 77 rolling frame that had most everything except an engine and transmission. Upper parts of the frame were coated with POR15 before the body was attached, the bottom to be finished later after suspension upgrades.
In terms of the Vette body, the corners of the window frame are rusted. Spot welds need to be cut out(see pic), rusted parts removed, and new corners welded in (new corners to weld in are included with the car). Here is an article on these. Most older Vettes have this issue.http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/paint-body/1804-rusty-c3-corvette-windshield-frames-can-be-fixedWe cut out and welded in new steel in the areas where the mounting holes on the bottom of the birdcage were rusted. There are also 2 one inch holes on the bottom of the uprights that need to be cut out and replaced. The rest of the birdcage looks intact.
There is some minor body work to be done before paint, and there was no signs of damage to the shell or frame from a previous accident/collision. Just an old faded red Corvette that needed some new color (first coat of polyester primer was being applied as we worked the car).
This was a complete car minus engine and transmission before we started the build. All parts are with the car. Has the original red bucket seats, red center console, dash, but many of the red vinyl trim pieces are old and faded/cracked, and it will need new door panels. We were going to install a black interior. Needs a new windshield but the door glass is original Astro glass.
The LT1 350 is bolted in but the ignition needs to be wired. The complete wiring harness and computer from the Camaro are included. Crossmember to mount the T56 6 speed manual transmission needs to be modified or replaced (it is removable on a 77 frame/the original 71 crossmember was welded in).
In addition to the parts removed from the car, extrasand new parts that gowith the car include:
- New Black Carpet and Padding, new exterior door handles, and a new EFI Fuel Tank from Ecklers
- New replacement window frame corners
- New Heavy Duty Differential Cover (housing on car has that typical broken ear)
- Original 4 speed differential and half shafts from rusted 71 frame
- Extra rear hubs/discs from the rusted 71 frame
What we were going to build is in the last photo...maybe next time!
Title is clear and in my name. VIN tag on the windshield post is intact. No issues there. Car is sold as is/where is in Colorado Springs. Buyer is responsible for pickup and shipping, but we can assist with loading if needed.
