Running driving Monza coupe with beautiful original interior
1963 Chevrolet Corvair
Cosmetically challenged Monza coupe with beautiful interior, great running 102 horse engine, and automatic transmission. All numbers match.
Odometer dial is faded from age, but there are many indications this is a true low mile Corvair. Original interior is near perfect, the peddles aren't heavily worn, and the engine runs evenly, burns no oil, and has no lifter noise or blow-by.
Car has the optional wire wheel covers, a newer Interstate battery, new Delco voltage regulator, rebuilt carbs, recent NOS AC spark plugs, Clark's top-of-the line spark plug wires, new transmission vacume modulator, all vacume hoses replaced, all fluids refreshed, new oil and air filters, new exhaust packings and hangers, and the steel cooling fan has been replaced with a later model light weight magnesium unit.
Tires and brakes are decent, and all glass is good. Trans is firm in all gears, but flares between low and drive unless shifted manually. It does not slip out of any gear, even around corners or at expressway speeds.
Issues: Headliner is torn. Engine leaks from o-rings. Rear wheel bearings sound a little dry, but still run cool. The left rear jacking point, front floors, and forward supports are rusted through, but the tunnel covers, rear floors, front cross-member, and trunk bottom are still solid. Car is driven regularly using auxillary gas tanks and an electric fuel pump mounted in back. Original gas tank is out of car needing to be cleaned or replaced, but will be provided.
Car was originally Palomar Red, more commonly found on Monza convertibles and Spyders. The body tag also shows the car had the unusual "rear speaker" option.
Driving this car makes me feel like a high school kid (I'm in my 60's), but I need something I can take on longer trips, and that my wife can drive. If you have a small hatchback or station wagon, maybe some sort of trade can be worked out.
I know most people will want to part the Corvair out to get all the goodies, but I'm hoping some loony tune will save it. I'll do anything I can to help, including storing it inside for a while.
Located near I-94 and I-80, just east of Chicago. -Thank you
