So, some clarification is in order. As many if not all Corvette aficionado's know, the '78 Pace Car stirred up quite a ruckus back some 40 plus years ago. For the first time in history, Corvette was chosen as the Pace Car for the 62nd running of the Indianapolis 500 ('bout time!). This...was certainly a milestone for America's only sports car!Another milestone in '78 was Corvette celebrating its 25th Anniversary! And amid all of the celebration, The Wall Street Journal decided to write an article about Corvette pacing Indy and that Chevrolet was planning something really special for the occasion. There was also speculation that this Special Ed. Corvette could turn out to be a future "Investmentâ€, as there were only supposed to be 300 units built. A nod to the '53 Corvette production #'s. Well, when the potential buying public found out about what was on the horizon, phones started to ring at Chevy dealers around the country! Problem was, it seemed there were a whole lot more than 300 people clamoring for a new Pace Car! When GM found out about all of the excitement, they decided to revise the original amount of cars to be built. There were also changes made to the design of the Pace Car.Originally, the car was due to be painted a two-tone Silver-Gray exterior with Red striping. Even the tires were going to be special Goodyear units that spelled out "Indy Pace Car" on the side walls but when the decision was made to greatly increase production to meet the high demand, concessions were needed to keep costs down a bit. The original color scheme would be changed to a Black-Silver two-tone exterior with Red striping. And the tire design was modified to a raised White outline that spelled out "Goodyear Eagle GT" to name just a couple of changes. When all of the dust settled, a total of 6,502 Pace Cars were built. It is believed that figure would allow each dealership in the U.S. to have a least one unit.This all-original Pace Car is "in the wrapperâ€. And has been driven only 82 (mostly in "Homecoming" parades) miles since it rolled off the St. Louis assembly line back in '78! The decals are still in the original box and the Window Sticker is still on the window. Includes all factory paperwork, including; Owner's Kit, Dealer Invoice, Pre-Delivery Check Sheet, Shipper and more! It starts up instantly, idles smooth and runs and drives just like a "brand new" '78 Corvette!
