Over the years I've owned at least one of every year. I got to admit, I really understand now why "good" 66-67 cars just are worth more money. In 1963 you had solid body mounts that would make you lose fillings driving it, and 4 wheel drum brakes. In 1964 we got to rubber body mounts but still had the drum brakes and little refinement, in 1965 we had rubber body mounts and "some" had disc brakes. In 66 and 67 things got a lot more refined, with Delco Moraine 4 wheel disc brakes, better seats, rubber body mounts...and the gills on a 66-67 car are much better looking as well.
As I look at eBay and check out the myriad of pigs in lipstick with shiny paint. There is so much to buying a mid year Corvette that most folks don't consider, so...I thought I'd throw a few thoughts at you before spending a bunch of money on a very shiny pile of junk. First off, in my opinion, frame off restored cars NEVER drive as well as nice "original" cars. I don't know why...it's just the way it is. Secondly, the body mounts on these cars are over 50 years old, they all are dry rotten, hard...falling apart, and if they haven't been replaced...these cars are just rubber bands and rattle like hell. I think thats why Corvettes got the name "rattle boxes". Now, to replace your body mounts sounds easy enough, but in my experience...90% of the time, it turns into a "frame off" restoration. This is due to rusty "bird cages"...busted bolts, ect. Its' a real nightmare.
Next, the frames on all these cars rust from the inside out. They were not coated on the inside and are a breeding ground for rust, especially in the rear kick up areas. I've seen bondo...expanding foam, creative welding jobs, ect. on these cars over the years. From the factory the frame weighed 314 lbs. The average weight I've seen when these cars come apart for restoration is about 200. Think about it, the average Corvette loses 1/3 of its frames strength due to rust thinning it out from the inside out. They also have a birdcage that surrounds the windshield, channels the rocker panel and terminates at the body mount in front of the rear wheel.
The last thing I'll touch on is wrecked Corvettes...I'd say about half of the cars on the market don't have the original front ends on them. They are fiberglass, very hard to fix when hit...and they don't need to be hit hard either. Also, about 65% of these cars have had fender flares installed and removed over the years. You've really got to know these cars, bonding strip locations, ect. to truly be able to valuate one. I've inspected a lot of midyear Corvettes over the past decade for friends in the Corvette club, and most of the time...I'm very disappointed...when the perspective owner was elated by the shiny paint. Ok, lets talk about the car!
So, this 2 owner 66 soft top roadster (no hard top) was a tough one to find. I wanted a "original" 66 Corvette Roadster with a factory automatic and FACTORY Air Conditioning, not frame off restored, with a perfect frame and never wrecked, also without ever having any body modifications...relatively easy you might think...well I guess I'm too particular because I looked at no less than 30 Corvettes all over the Country before I bought this one. After owning numerous 4 speed cars, with ugly aftermarket A/C...I came to realize I couldn't drive them for more than 20 minutes at a time. They just weren't relaxing to cruise, my wife couldn't drive it...so...I found this one!
This Texas 66 Rally Red Roadster was only owned by one previous family. It fit the bill for everything I was looking for, but had been sitting around for some time. The engine is a CE block that was rebuilt exactly 30k miles ago now. The trans and rear end were completely rebuilt, the brakes were rebuilt using SS sleeved calipers. The body mounts were carefully replaced...the interior was completely gone through, new carpet, door panels, seats, convertible top...all top of the line Al Knoch stuff...no garbage here. NOTE THE HOOD IS NOT FULLY CLOSED IN THE PICTURES!!!
So, what we have here is a excellent little red Corvette, with nice paint, excellent fit and finish, beautiful interior, mechanicals all gone through...beautiful chrome and stainless, ect. The car is just that, a nice car. The A/C system has been completely gone through, and all that is left to be done to this car is install the compressor. It came back from the rebuilder and I never got around to it.
This is a car where everything works, lights, signals, headlight up, down, indicators. interior lights, reverse lights EVERYTHING.
Here is a few Questions I would ask:
Q: How is the frame, birdcage? A: Amazing, I've been through it with a horoscope, it amazes even me.
Q:If you had to rate the paint on a scale of 1-10? A: I'm very particular, so many people will have different ideas...but its very nice.
Q:Do you have a clean title? A: Of course I do.
Q:Would you like to trade? A: No, I need the space, or I'd keep it...
Q:Could I drive it home to California? A: Sure could...would I? No...shipping is inexpensive...she just turned 53 years old.
Q:Arent Automatic Corvettes worth less? A: Tell that to the growing number of people who prefer them, and A/C
Q:I got a loan through my credit union.A: Then go buy one from a Dealer.
Q:What is the best you'll take? A: My car has a lot going for it that 90% of these cars don't. You get what you pay for, however...make me a fair offer...I'm realistic!
In closing...this is a very nice mix of a one repaint car with a power glide and A/C...it needs nothing to enjoy. I have a Central Dispatch account for auto shipping (what the brokers use) and I can have this to your door in 72 hours. That simple.
Please: Corvette experts...If you aren't interested in the car I don't need the commentary.
However, if you'd like to talk about this mid year Corvette...call me up. I enjoy talking about this labor of love! (630) 273-7595
