1956 Chevrolet 150 Sedan Description1956 Chevrolet 150 Four-door Sedan
Rare survivor Tri-Five Sedan One of 29,898 examples made in 1956 Turquoise Blue exterior White vinyl and black & white cloth interior 235 CID Blue Flame inline six-cylinder engine with dual exhausts Three-speed column-shift manual transmissionOften overlooked by customers in favor of its glitzier siblings, the Two-Ten and Bel-Air, the Chevrolet One-Fifty is rarely seen these days but we have one at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. This example was built at General Motors’ Norwood, Ohio factory and was sold at Dallas Chevrolet in Jackson-Wellston, Ohio.
Currently dressed in Turquoise Blue, the car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition. The car’s windows are clear and intact along with the headlights, which look fantastic. The car’s bodywork is straight, its engine bay is extremely tidy, and the car’s chrome bumpers fit tightly to the car’s body and shine brilliantly. A novel factoid about all 1956 full-size Chevrolets is that the driver’s side taillamp hides the fuel filler cap.
Under the hood is Chevy’s well-known Blue Flame Six, a 235 CID straight six-cylinder engine breathing through dual exhausts. It’s paired to a three-speed manual transmission with a column-mounted shifter.
Inside, the car’s white vinyl and black cloth bench seats look very sharp and are in excellent shape, as is the black carpeting and the contrasting white headliner. The factory two-spoke steering wheel is present. The wheel, instrument panel and inner door panels are all in very good condition. Completing the interior is a Custom Sound AM/FM radio.
The Chevrolet One-Fifty, or 150 was the economy/fleet model of the Chevrolet car from 1953 to 1957. It took its name by shortening the production series number (1500) by one digit in order to capitalize on the numerical auto name trend of the 1950s. The numerical designation “150” was also sporadically used in company literature. It replaced the Styleline Special model available in previous years.
The One-Fifty was mainly conceived as a fleet model and little effort was spent marketing it to the average car buyer of the day, although sales weren’t limited to fleets. It was most popular with police, state governments, small businesses, economy-minded consumers and hot rodders. Chevrolet sold substantially fewer One-Fifties than Two-Tens or the Chevrolet Bel-Air in every year of its life; just 29,898 One-Fifties were made in 1956.
True to Chevrolet’s vision, the 150 was no-frills basic transportation. It had limited options, stark trim, solid colors, plain heavy-duty upholstery and rubberized flooring. Small things like ashtrays, cigarette lighters and even mirrors were extra cost options. Compared to the mid-level Two-Ten or premium Bel Air models, the One-Fifty was stark and bland.
Body style choices were also limited to sedans, Handyman wagons (two-door in 1955–1957). The only body styles specific to the One-Fifty were decidedly fleet oriented — the sedan delivery (a two-door wagon without rear windows and the rear seat removed) and the business sedan — a two-door sedan with immobile rear windows and back seat removed. Powertrain choices were limited to manual transmissions and low output engines until 1954.
Competition to this Chevy in 1956 included Dodge’s Coronet Get-Away Sedan, Ford’s Customline Mileage Maker Sedan, Hudson’s Wasp Super Four-door Sedan, Nash’s Statesman Super Four-door Sedan and Plymouth’s Plaza Four-door Sedan.
This car is a testament to a simpler time, when a car could be repaired with a set of hand tools versus a computer and you could see the pavement or ground under the engine with the hood open. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars to check out this rolling piece of simplicity today before someone else puts it in their garage.
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 72,618 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
