For the 1965 model year, Chevrolet offered the legendary "big block" engine in a Corvette for the first time. Produced only during the second half of the model year, a specially tuned, 425-horsepower version of the 396 cubic inch unit fitted to the Corvette, which transformed it into a tire shredding monster that was both cheaper and faster than the previous range-topping Fuel-Injected 327. The 396 was only offered for one half of the production year, as the 427 cubic inch big block replaced the 396 for 1966. This 1965 ½ Corvette coupe is one of just 2,157 examples built with the 396 and is finished in its original colors of Glen Green over a saddle deluxe leather interior. It is a very nicely presented car with a good quality, well-detailed older restoration still appearing in good order. The body is very straight with crisp lines and very good panel fit. Glen Green is a fabulous color on the Bill Mitchell-penned body, and the paint on this car presents in very good condition, with just a few minor cracks visible on close inspection in the typical trouble areas. Overall, it is extremely attractive with nice chrome and good quality detailing. It rides on a set of reproduction P48 knock-off wheels with new whitewall radial tires for just the right look. The cockpit is trimmed in saddle-colored leather and carpet as original (code 421), with correct pattern materials on the seats, carpets and door panels. It is equipped with options such as the teakwood steering wheel (N36), transistor ignition (L75), Whitewall tires, tinted glass (A02) and an AM/FM radio (Z01). The interior is very well detailed, with correct gauges, seatbelts and a properly working original clock. Lifting the hood reveals the 396 cubic inch, 425 horsepower V8 which is believed to be the original unit for the car. The engine was recently rebuilt, is properly detailed down to the overspray on the exhaust manifolds, and it runs strongly. Power is sent through a 4-speed manual transmission and on through a 3.55:1 rear axle. Other options include transistorized ignition, and off-road exhaust (N14). Performance is astounding, with huge torque and endless pull from the 396 along with an awesome soundtrack. Road manners are excellent with excellent handing and a tight, well-sorted feel. This car is genuinely fast, very well sorted and incredibly enjoyable to drive. This car has been awarded as TOP FLIGHT by the NCRS (2018).
