Description:
1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS 454
A total of 145,976 Monte Carlos were built for their debut in 1970. Of those, only 3.823 were equipped with the LS5 454 engine with the SS 454 package. This SS 454 Monte Carlo was one of the few ordered with the Z20 option code SS 454 package which included the high compression, 360 horsepower 454 engine. It was a combination of raw power and luxury, designed to compete in the market against the other sport/luxury models such as the Pontiac Grand Prix, and Olds Cutless Supreme. The only Chevrolet with more horsepower available from the factory in 1970 was the legendary Chevelle LS6 454 and Corvette. This car was produced in the most desirable color combination, Triple Black. This means it rolled off of the assemble line with a black paint job, a black vinyl top, and black interior. It appears to have been repainted once previously. It is highly optioned car with the Z20 SS 454, turbo 400 automatic transmission, air conditioning, power locks, power windows, tinted glass, bright exterior moldings, deluxe bucket seats, console, remote control rear mirror, auto leveling control, tilt steering, positraction 256 axle, Am/Fm stereo, lamp package, tachometer and gauges, power disc brakes, power steering, heavy duty battery, clock, rally wheels, and the ultra rare washer fluid jar monitor system.
The car has the original born-with factory installed engine, transmission, and rear axle. I will absolutely 100% guarantee that this car is a factory numbers matching car, no excuses period. The engine, trans, and axle in this car are the ones installed in the Baltimore Chevrolet factory in 1970. The engine is stamped on the front pad with T0106CRN and the VIN 188145258. The block casting number is 3963512 and the cast date is L189. The Transmission is stamped 385 70-CR-5767 and the VIN 188145258. Pictures of the stamps are included with the auction listing. These are the original stamps. No decking or re-stamping has been done. The axle is stamped CRK 1105B with a casting date of J189. The alternator has been replaced at some point in the car's life. The carb is a factory Quadrajet with a stamping of 7040200 and is dated 2399. The car runs and drives great. I do not think the engine has ever been out of the car but I think the transmission has been rebuilt and the trans tag has no paint on it. I did remove the trans tag to verify the numbers but it will obviously come with the car. I do have a brand new trans tag that goes with the sale. The engine does not smoke or use oil. It starts easily. I have not had the distributor out of the car to verify numbers on that. It may or may not be the original. It has the rear anti-sway bar and the boxed rear control arms as it should. The car retains the rear shock guards which are unique to the Monte SS 454 auto leveling system. Pictures are included of those. The air manifold is also in its correct place mounted to the underside of the car above the axle, also unique to the leveling system. A picture is included of that. The air pump is not currently installed but is included in the trunk. It appears to be a NOS unit or a rebuilt one. I cannot attest to its functionality. The mounting bracket for the pump is not with the car. The car has no spare, jack, or jack tools.
The paint is nice driver quality. It is deep and shiny. There are the typically small dents, scratches, and chips that you would expect on a near 50 year old unrestored car. The car is starting to show rust bubbles under the paint in numerous locations. There are rust bubbles on the front of the hood by the chrome trim, under the vinyl top, on the panel between the the vinyl top and trunk, on the front fenders in front of the doors, the front of the doors, and on the inside lip of the doors. As of yet, there is no rust through, but what the car really needs is to be stripped down to bare metal and refinished. The rear quarters do not appear to have any rust over the wheels. The vinyl top should come off as well. The bumpers need re-chromed. The panels appear to be factory originals. It does not appear to have had any panels replaced. There is no obvious rust in the trunk pan. The floors appear solid as well. The glass is all original but there is a glass etching of a rose on the driver's rear quarter window. It is tasteful but certainly not original to the car. All of the power windows work as do the power locks. The lights and turn signals work. A couple of the dash lights are burned out and it could use a new light switch as the rheostat doesn't work quite right. The radio appears to work but doesn't get any stations. The wipers work. The wiper monitoring system appears to work. The body gaps are good. The chrome trim is good. The air compressor engages but the air is not cold. The interior seems to be original. It all appears usable with the exception of the driver's seat bottom. There is a split in the seam. It can be seen in the pics. The headliner is very nice. The dash pad will need to be replaced. The tires and brakes are new in the last 5 years and have had less than 500 miles on them, per the person I purchased the car from. It appears to have near new flow master dual exhaust and new shocks on it.
The Cowl tag is the original that was installed on the car by the factory. It shows the interior code of 757 and the paint code 19 as well as the B indicating black interior, paint, and vinyl top. It shows a build date of 02A.
The car comes with the original Baltimore build sheet. It has been laminated to protect it. I will also 100% guarantee that this build sheet is the original and not a reproduction or from another vehicle. It shows the options as:

I sent the VIN number to the NCRS to get the shipping report. Normally this service is only for Camaros, Chevelles, and Corvettes, They were able to find this VIN (even though they called it a Chevelle). This is proof from GM that the car was delivered to the selling dealer and corroborates the trim tag and the build sheet. It comes with the sale. It states that the production date was 2/6/1970 and that the car was delivered to Luby Chevrolet in Forrest Hills New York, the original selling dealer.
I listed this car for sale in April of this year. The buyer asked I hold it for him until the mid summer. That time has come and gone and he no longer is responding to calls or emails. The car was never paid for so I am relisting it. During the last auction, I received a message from someone claiming to have the original Protect-O-Plate. I was able to purchase it and it is included with the sale. It appears to be legitimate. I have a friend that says it is real. The POP is the only part of the car I can't say for sure is the real deal.
The car is up for auction without a warranty given or implied. It is a running, driving, stopping car that can be enjoyed as is, or restored to her former glory. It is relatively un-molested and very original. These 1970 Monte SS 454s are really starting to increase in value. This car is one of 3,823, making it more rare than the 1970 LS6 Chevelle. Its is also the most desirable color combination, Triple Black. Its is a 100% numbers matching car (engine, trans, and axle) and I will guarantee that, money back, not including shipping. It is also highly optioned and factory documented with the factory build sheet. It comes with additional documentation from the NCRS and the Protect-O-Plate which I have gotten since the car was last listed.
This SS454 Monte Carlo really is worthy of a frame off restoration, which is what it really needs and deserves. That was my intention with the car but I am selling off my project cars to enjoy the finished cars I have. I also want to get rid of the multiple storage units I currently rent. The winning buyer is to arrange and pay for shipping. I would encourage you to inspect the car yourself or send and agent to inspect it. It looks great in the pics and from about 5 feet, but does need rust work. I may have left out important details of the condition of the car. I am doing my best to list it and all known problems to the best of my ability. My feedback rating is important to me as I have been buying and selling on EBAY for near 20 years. I want the buyer to be happy with the car and have no surprises. Please email, call, or text with questions. Additional pictures can be provided via text at 641-569-3045.
There is NO RESERVE and a very reasonable starting bid. I do reserve the right to end the auction at any time for any reason. I would prefer to just let the auction run. I typically do not sell outside of EBAY once I have listed a vehicle, but if you feel that you want to make me a buy it now offer, go ahead. I would like a Paypal deposit within a week and the car paid for within 4 weeks. I am very reasonable when it comes to a pick up date. Payment in the form of cash, cashier's check, or wire transfer. The car will not leave the property until fund transfer is verified. Car located in Pella, Iowa 50219
Thanks and good luck!
Mike
