Description:

1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Coupe

Good fun at any speed... 1964 Corvair Monza Coupe, 4 speed. Last year of the "early model."

This Corvair is in solid driver quality condition, and runs very nicely. It shows well in Bahama Green with Saddle interior and black wall tires, which is just how it was delivered in 1964. It has a rear mounted, air cooled, 2.7 L flat six. One of the things I like most about this car is its extensively documented history. It was with its passionate original owner until 2007, and includes two binders of extensive records dating back to purchase that will go with the car. During my time with the car it has started without fail, purrs at idle, and has solid brake feel and performance. Synchros engage in forward gears, and transmission is fully functional, but it no longer feels tight. The motor pulls strong and while it may not be as fast modern traffic, it will cruise at a safe highway speed, and with a lot more style! This car is ready to be enjoyed as is, and would make a great platform for a restoration with lots of originality and history.

Based on documentation I believe this to be the original motor and transmission. There was a documented engine rebuild and transmission work during the original owner's tenure. I installed new radial tires in OE sizing with a radial spare (and I kept one period correct bias ply spare). I recently replaced fluids (high zinc synth motor oil, and appropriate GL4 trans/diff gear oil), front shocks, bushings for front sway bar, and front brake lines. Odometer reads 67k, but is likely 167k, sold as "total mileage unknown." No carpeting. Dent in driver's side door. Paint and bright work shine nicely but are not perfect. Garaged year round, and properly stored in the winter.

I enjoy driving this to work and into town several times a week throughout the summer and fall. I always get lots of thumbs up, stories, and questions about the unique design. Bid with confidence now, and be the next owner to enjoy this very unique and important piece of American automotive history.

I encourage prospective purchasers to contact me to discuss the condition of the car and the terms of sale. I will contact low feedback bidders, failure to respond back will result in cancellation of bid. The car is in Bozeman, MT. I am happy to work with a remote purchaser on shipping, and I have sold and/or shipped several cars to and from Bozeman without issue numerous times.

This car is for sale in local and national classifieds, I reserve the right to terminate this listing at any time. Car will not be considered sold until a $500 deposit and signed purchase agreement is received. Deposit must be received within 48 hours of auction close. Full payment must be received before car is shipped, and title transferred. I have a clean Montana title in hand.

Thank you for looking!

8/30/18 Update: In response to inquiries I have taken additional pictures. They include the underside, topside of the motor, and paperwork (name of original owner redacted in pictures only) and have been added to the gallery (add. pics available upon request). While underneath the car I noted that the fuel tank appears to have been replaced recently, and the baffles at the back of the motor have been locked in the open position. When functioning these baffles close on cold starts and have a thermostat that opens them when warm. This is a common failure point, and replacement thermostat and actuator are available from Clark's and other suppliers. I have never experienced any issue starting this motor, or getting it up to operating temperature. In response to questions about the body and chassis: I believe the car was repainted at some point, and I assume that body work has been done. I placed a magnet over numerous points on the car last night and found only one "dead" spot, on the top side of the back right pillar. The underside has never been restored to my knowledge, and is consistent with a 54 year old car. I encourage any potential buyers to contact me to discuss the car further and inspect in person. Thank you for looking!
