1970 Chevelle SS 396, Numbers match, build sheet.
1970 Chevrolet Chevelle 762
1970 Chevelle SS 396, turbo 400, 3.31 limited slip, power windows, tilt steering and Air Conditioning. Please see the build sheet for all other options. This car was sold new at Burt Chevrolet in Englewood Colorado and looks to be ordered as more of a cruiser than a boulevard brawler. Original colors were Mist Green Metallic with Black stripes a Green vinyl topand a Green cloth interior, an interesting combination for sure.
The car retains it's original born with engine, transmission and rear axle. Some items to note are the fact that it still has the correct alternator and distributorbut has the wrong quadrajet and a 1971 dated (correct style) intake manifold.
The interior is very original with the exception of the radio being replaced. Interior lights work as well as all 4 power windows and gauges except for the clock of course.
The body is what would consider very solid, but again being from the Midwest may skew my opinion. The fenders I believe are repairable, the doors are very nice and the quarters have some rust behind the rear wheels but nothing terrible. The hood is the correct early style "small triangle" design. The car has been undercoated at some point in it's life which may have helped save it from the ravages of road salt. The floors and trunk are very nice and shouldn't need anything but a good cleaning unless a full blown restoration is in your future.
The car did not have the correct SS wheels on it when I bought it so the wheels are not correctly date coded to the car. It hasnew BF Goodrich tires and used trim rings and center caps.
OK, so much for the good. Now here's the bad... I bought the car last fall as a non running car with the hopes of getting lucky and getting up and running with little fanfare. Part of that came to fruition. I diagnosed a broken valve spring and no spark. I replaced the valve spring, set the valves, added new plugs, wires, oil, filter, PCV valve etc. I dropped in an HEI distributor that I had laying around and low and behold the car fired up. I got it to idle, set the timing and I was stoked. I've driven the car maybe 200 miles since getting it running last fall and it always had a slight tick but I chalked it up to a lifter or maybe even a small exhaust leak but it seems to be getting worse. I've decided not to put any more miles on it for fear of hurting the original engine. The car starts right up anddoesn't smoke a bit but the car had sit for approximately 20 years before I bought it so who knows what could be in it's past? I've been wavering back and forth as whetherto pull the engine for an inspection and probable rebuild or sell it as is with the engine noise and I've decided on the latter. I know pulling the engine will be the first step down the slippery slope to a full blown restoration which I just can't justify at the moment. Hopefully someone can take on the project or maybe even determine the engine noise is easily fixable. I'll leave that to the next owner to determine.
I would be happy to discuss the car in detail to anyone seriously interested. Please email me through Ebay with any questions or to request my contact number. I am not overly tech savvy but can and send pertinent pictures to anyone that requests them.Inspections are encouraged of course.
