1968 Chevrolet barn find C10 K10 Custom 4x4 high desert survivor time capsule NR
1968 Chevrolet C-10 Custom
For sale: 1968 Chevrolet K-10 4x4 from the dry high desert of central Montana, truck has never seen salt. A fussy older gentleman and WWII veteran owned it for over 40 years, I have known this truck and the family for decades, and bought it from his estate last year. Very well cared-for truck with 64k miles, it was used for hunting, fishing, and camping trips and he owned another truck for daily driver use. One repaint in the factory color about 25 years ago. We couldn't find the service records that support the mileage in the estate paperwork(and we know he kept them),but I'm quite certain that it hasn't rolled over. Pedal and steering wheel wear are commensurate with the mileage, the original 327-4V engine runs strong with great oil pressure, and the body is so tight you can literally close the doors with one finger. It sounds ridiculous, but this truck has no rust that I can see and I do know where to look. I'm a retired engineer and a collector of vintage trucks and 4x4s. Reason for selling is that I recently found an astonishing survivor 11k mile GMC 4x4, and since I'm not Jay Leno, need to sell one or possibly even two rigs to accommodate that unicorn find. This 68 K10 is very hard to let go of, and I know I won't find another nice survivor like this. Rare factory cab light truck, and it still has the original spare tire carrier underneath! Vintage GemTop cap shown is included, and also includes period 68 Chevy truck manual and brochure. Great truck to use as is for trips to the Home Depot or to Cars N Coffee. I'll do my best to describe it below, please read the entire ad and see linked Photobucket album and YouTube video.Exterior: Overall nice driver quality rig that shows some age but presents well. Truck was never abused. Repainted once about 25 years ago in the original color, looks to have been an inexpensive job but still shines and the casual observer on the street probably won't find fault - car show nitpickers will, it isn't perfect by any means. If you want a high-end show truck, it'll need a respray. It's just fine as is for a driver. There are some cracks in the paint on passenger door and driver front fender - see Photobucket album below. I couldn't get them to show in pics, but there are a few hail dings you can see in the hood in certain light. I had the cab roof resprayed last year when I replaced a cracked rear glass. There were some dents in roof, looked like from a tree branch, that was taken to bare metal and repaired. Don't see any rust anywhere, I've owned dozens of these 67-72s and I'm simply amazed. Rockers, fenders, window frame, box, body mounts all look good. Underside pics included in the Photobucket album listed below. At first I thought the outer rockers may have been replaced, as the lower edge looked different than my other trucks, but I came to realize that the bottom rolled lip of the original rockers had been straightened to accommodate side steps that were on the truck at one time. Not noticeable unless you're under the truck on a creeper. I pulled topper, checked box rails for rust (none) and installed new camper seal tape. Glass is good. Inside of box is in good condition and the wheel wells are not beat up. There is a few spots in wood bed floor that the older gent tried to repair with caulking, and that caulking cracked out. Passenger door handle needs work, button stuck in and door won't open from the outside. There was a hole cut for a wiring connector to the camper shell, it has a cover and it's painted.
Interior: Original driver quality, a bit weathered but nice enough that the wife won't complain. No cracks in original dash pad, original seat upholstery is torn under blanket cover. Original floor mat has some cracks around shifter. Ding inside driver door on the inside above armrest(shown). Original seat upholstery is torn under cover. Some minor pitting on original sill moldings. All gauges working, as are heater, wipers, dash lights, emergency brake, horn, and vintage CB. Original radio is currently non-op, and rearview mirror is missing, they are reproduced.
Mechanical: Starts, runs, and drives out well. Choke works and fast idle works. Original 327 4bbl (YX suffix code) pulls strong with good oil pressure, no leaks, no smoke(other than small puff at startup from valve seals). Original 4 speed trans shifts smooth. Factory equipped with the Rockwell transfer case, and it has the characteristic gear whine that those units are famous for. 4x4 works well, I tested it in 4L and 4H and drove it this winter with hubs turned in. Hubs turn in smoothly and are not beat up. Period correct 7.00-15 "pie crust" traction tires have good tread and no cracks. They do follow the ruts as all bias ply tires will, but on smooth roads drive surprisingly well. I installed new battery and had new Flowmaster exhaust put on. Most everything works on the truck, only issue that needs immediate attention are brake lights not working. Small oil drip from transfer case that will leave a spot on the floor. One exhaust manifold is cracked, and will tick when it's cold till the truck is warmed up.
Pricing/Misc: Vintage fishing/camping gear shown in photos not included. Also 1968 Montana license plates not included, but I have other old plates I can include. I looked around for comps, but there are very few 68 K10s out there for sale, and every one I saw was modified, lifted, wheeled, mudded, or hooned. Didn't see anything like this grandpa truck to compare to.
If you're looking for a restored show truck, this isn't your ride. If you want an honest original survivor to putt around in and enjoy, this could be the one. Title is clear and in my name, buyer will need to get insurance upon purchase as I will cancel mine. Truck can stay here for 30 days, after that $100/month storage will be due. Truck runs and drives well, but flying in and driving it home isn't advisable, Montana is a huge state with many areas with no cell service or roadside assistance. Reasonable transport is available, and I will help load the truck on a transport.
