1960 Chevy Chevrolet Biscayne RARE 409 Engine/ 4 spd. car 4 Dr. Sedan Bubble Top
1960 Chevrolet Impala Biscayne
This is a 1960 Chevrolet Biscayne 4 Dr. Sedan, 43,690 miles on the body. Only 3-4000 miles on the completely Rebuilt 409 Engine. This car was purchased new in Fredricksburg, Texas, was driven some, then sat, under cover for many years. 2nd owner bought it, and had it Trailered up to Ill, where it sat, indoors, for 12 more years. That's when my son and I bought it in 2004, 38,000 miles on the clock, with the original 235, 6 cyl. Engine, and 3 speed on the tree. We fixed the brakes and fuel tank, and drove it about 1500 miles, then started the 409 conversion. For mostly being original body and paint, It is a good looking car. No major rust or rot anywhere, top side or bottom. It just has some small areas here and there of very light surface rust. I took 80+ pictures to try and show the flaws in the paint and body, which are not anything major. Hopefully, the link I included at the end of this description will allow you to open it up, in order to see a video and the rest of the pictures. Or, maybe you can copy and paste it on your computer...
Floor pans are solid Frame is excellent. The body has never had any rust thru. Just a few areas of very slight surface rust. There are a couple of small dents, one on the right side rocker, the right front leading edge of the hood is pushed down a little bit, but it closes just fine. The front bumper has a couple of small dents. Most of the paint seems to be original, although there are a couple of repaired areas. But, all in all, for a 58 year old car, this car is very presentable, and drives just fine. The engine is a 1965 409 truck block, we had it bored .060 over, bringing it to 421 cubic inches. The stock forged crank journals still measured in tolerance, so it was not ground. The engine was also balanced, fitted with new Ross, 11 to 1, Forged, 060 over pistons, new Chrome moly rings, double roller timing chain, bearings, new Scorpion 1.75 Roller Rockers, new Competition 280H Cam and Flat Tappet hydraulic lifters. It has a 1965 Factory GM, Aluminum, large port, 400 Hp. Single carb intake manifold, fed with a new Quick Fuel, 750 cfm, mechanical secondary, double pumper carb, with electric choke. Aluminum Water pump also. The engine boasts a set of $2100 Edlebrock Aluminum heads, for more performance, lighter weight, and a cooler running engine. I bought all Deep Groove Pulleys for the entire engine, it has never thrown a belt. Ignition is fired by a Pertronics Electronic Ignition Aluminum Distributor and a MSD Blaster 2 coil. The car has a Carter Electric 9 psi., fuel pump in the rear, pumping fuel thru 1/2" aluminum fuel line, up to a pressure regulator up front. There are two Fram canister fuel filters, one on either side of the fuel pump. There is a two speed electric fan, wired through relays, and switches under the dash. The fan and the Aluminum Radiator Cools this engine. Exhaust exits thru a pair of Doug's Triy, ceramic coated headers, then thru stainless steel 2 1/2" Flowmaster mufflers, then all the way out the back thru 2 1/2" Stainless Pipes. Sounds very healthy! Power is transmitted to the M20 Muncie 4 speed transmission, thru an 11 inch Centerforce Dual Friction clutch. The driveshaft is still a- 2 piece, but it is specially built, with a telescoping slide joint in the rear half. The center driveshaft support is a billet aluminum, heavy duty piece. The rear U-joint is a Large, heavy duty 1350 joint, I believe the strongest U-joint you can put on a standard driveshaft. The rear end is a Ford 9 inch. It has New heavy Duty Strange axles, 31 spline, with 1/2" studs. It has a brand new Posi unit, and new 3:70 gears, professionally installed, less than 1000 miles ago. I bought a 2nd upper Banana link, from Showcars,(Dr. 409), and welded that in place on the upper left side of the differential for added support. They sell a kit with the correct brackets to bolt the upper part of the banana link to. The rear springs are heavy duty, added new, when we built the car. They also have Airlift airbags in them. The car now has 43,690 or so miles on it, so all these parts, including the engine, have between 3-4000 miles on them. Full set of AutoMeter Gauges, which light up with a nice, cool Blue light. Including, a calibrated Fuel Gauge. Less than 200 miles ago, I put a BRAND NEW Hurst, Competition Plus Shifter in the car. Shifting it is flawless now. It could use a new shifter boot. The car also, now has a front, heavy duty, stabilizer bar. Front power disc brakes, made for that car, made by Master Brakes, I think they're called. I have a lot of receipts, but not all of them. This was a heater and radio delete car, but has a dealer installed heater, which works, and my son has put in a nice Alpine AM/FM, Stereo, with an amplifier in the trunk, and 2 6x9s in the rear deck. If you want sound, you got it! The battery is mounted in a battery box in the trunk, secured down. I used heavy welding cable to run power up to the front of the car for all the 12 volt feeds.
The car is easily driven on the street, makes a Great Cruiser, and head Turner. Wipers, heater, electric fans, brakes, wipers, etc., everything works. The doors all shut like the car is 1 year old. I have had it to the track about 4 times over the last 10 years, the drivetrain is VERY STOUT. Otherwise, the car sits most of the time. I only get it out occasionally. The seats are nicely recovered, door panels are good, new carpet. All lights and turn signals work, even the cigarette lighter works. The original spare is still in the trunk, no rot, it holds air, I don't think I've ever had to add air to the spare. You will not find many 1960 Chevrolets, this clean, with a mostly original body, paint, and interior. Clear title. I still have the original owners manual, with the original Purchaser's name, and the car dealer's badge. A fresh, strong, good running 409 engine is getting hard to find nowadays!
