As I understand it this car was built into a gasser in the mid 60's by George Tapscott. If you look through the pictures you will see a black & white picture of the car with an injected motor in it....I have been told that is when it was first campaigned. The car was sold to Ron Philipp sometime between the mid-60's and the early70's as I was told it was painted by Ernie Ball in 1974 with the paint scheme it still wears to this day.I'm told Ernie was "the custom painter" in Illinois back in the day.Along the way the chassis & tinwork was re-done by Ed Jackson Chassis of Springfield, IL, from what I understand he was a Mopar guy and that's the reason for the 8-3/4 Chrysler rearend under the car.Somewhere along the later 80's the car was bought by Kevin Moore and started its life as a show car, and occasional bracket car.I bought the car from Kevin's brother Jim, who along with Craig Jackson piloted this car under Kevin's ownership.
I'm 51 and not originally from Illinois, so I never saw this car race, but a lot of the color photos of the car when Ron Philipp was driving it are from Beardstown Drag Strip in Illinois in 1975 and were taken by a friend of mine Jim Fuller.Jim is a die-hard Mopar guy, but still took pictures of this car.......Nuf said!!!
As it sits today this car runs a 301 cu. In Small Block Chevy (283 + .120â€) with a solid roller cam / Crane roller rockers / Victor Jr. intake / 750 Double Pumper Holley / custom headers on it.The transmission is a TH400 with an 8-inch convertor, and the rearend is an 8-3/4 Mopar with 5.57 gears.Car has WIlwood disc front brakes / chrome straight axle with chrome radius rods & rack and pinion steering.Front suspension is adjustable coil-over shocks / Custom 2 X 3 chassis / early Mustang radiator with Eelco front mounted aluminum fuel tank / aluminum interior panels / tubs / trunk / flip front end with separate hood.Decklid is pinned on too for easy removal. The rear suspension is ladder bars with a diagonal track locator and is suspended by coil springs with the shocks running through the center of the spring cups.
The car had been sitting for years and years when I got it, so I did the following:
Remove the intake and look things over
Lube the cam / etc.
Re-seal the intake (new gaskets)
Re-seal the exhaust (new gaskets)
Prime the motor
Oil the cylinders
Add a new fuel pump (cheapie - just to run it with - the vintage Stewart-Warner pump is still there and partially works)
Start the car and make sure it runs / moves / stops
I made sure to not change anything as I wanted to leave the car as I found it
It would be a blast to see this car race again.....The info I have says that it ran 6.70's in the 18th and 10.80's in the ¼, but no proof of that, and not honestly sure if those numbers were with the current engine setup or a similar engine?
Also understand that I haven't changed anything, so if you want to race the car you would need a full set of tires, and a full safety checkout of the whole car.Because it was built back when I doubt it would certify, so the fastest you would be able to go is 10.00 before you start chassis / cage work.
It does run and drive and has brakes....That is as far as I went....I have not changed anything on the car.I honestly only got it running because I really wanted to hear it and drive it a short distance, just to say I did and to be part of the cars history...Job done, now it's time for someone else to take their part in the cars history.
This car would be a blast to bracket race / nostalgia race / show / cackle fest / Hot Rod reunions......You name it....It's a real 1960 corvette Gasser, with real race history.
The car doesn't have a title or VIN# so if you want to street drive it you will have to apply for an assigned title / VIN # in your state...I can't provide you with any VIN details, but I can give you a bill of sale, along with a copy of the bill of sale I got for the car so that you can show the chain of ownership.
Here is your chance to own and be part of the history of a real 60's Gasser!!!!
I have lots more pictures / etc. of the car that aren't shown in the auction......The buyer will be given copies of everything that I have
LOOK OVER THE PICTURES, THEY PRETTY MUCH TELL THE STORY
