One of our favorite movies at Arise Customs, being Texas boys and football fans...is of course, Varsity Blues! Clearly we are also square body fans so after building a Fall Guy replica last year we considered a couple of other famous squares...fast forward about 6 months and a GREAT candidate landed in our laps for the truck we most desired! A blue 1979 Chevy K20 rolled into our shop! The truck Billy Bob drove in the movie had a few things that would be not only hard to find these days (such as the tube bumpers), but really just not look right (his interior as another example, the seats were likely pulled from a Chevy van and the dash covers...not a fan). We also prefer not to add body lifts when not absolutely needed. So clearly the truck is "inspired by the movie" but not a replica.
What did we do with her? The frame got cleaned up and repainted. A 6" lift installed with new wheels and 35" all terrain BFG tires. Steering box and components refreshed or replaced where needed. Moog joints and suspension components used. A new dual steering stabilizer added. Next a new crate 350 with an RV cam dropped in with a big Edelbrock carb...long tube headers bolted up back through true dual Super 40 Flowmaster exhaust. A freshened turbo 400 transmission bolted up and a custom rear driveshaft balanced and lengthened to fit. Brakes replaced as well as all new parking brake setup. The body got new Varsity Blue paint inside and out. The floors got multiple coats of liner. The bench seat got a new pad and upholstery. New windshield installed. Tinted the windows. Paint matched liner sprayed in the bed and down the sides to protect from most rock chips from the oversized tires. A new Optima battery powers everything. Inside a new Kenwood Bluetooth/USB connectivity head unit run to dual 6x9s in custom boxes behind the seats as well as replacement dash speakers provide the country sound track audible just above the rumble of this beast's roar. New side mirrors bolted to the doors and a new chrome roll bar and lights bolted in back to round out the look as well as matching steps and entry handles much like what was on the movie truck.
Fresh fluids, filters, wiper blades...should have completed this build...but within just a couple test drives we decided we were not happy with the way the trans was shifting. We pulled the trans out and swapped in a high quality new turbo 400 with all upgraded parts built to hold quite a bit of power with a LIFETIME WARRANTY from the builder to do the rest of this truck build justice.
This truck is a blast to drive around town and turns everyone's head. Sounds like a beast and runs great. Fires up great and has a great lope from the cam pounding through the headers and Flowmasters. With a new drivetrain this is dependable enough to drive daily but cool enough to be a weekend toy too!
