1989 chevrolet k3500 12V Cummins conversion
1989 Chevrolet C/K Pickup 3500 Silverado
1989 1 ton Silverado 4x4 converted to 12V Cummins Turbo diesel. The conversion was done at a shop in Utah. I have put around 300 miles on it. The engine is a 92 Dodge Cummins, originally from a 5 spd truck. Smaller exhaust housing turbo swapped on for quicker spooling. Oil pressure and water temp sending units are Chev. Has new thermostat and gasket. A/C comp is dodge (new) but needs charged, AC developed leak after being in local diesel shop for additional work: New front gear case installed and dowel pin addressed, New 50hp industrial injectors, tune up, 3k governor spring, fuel pin.
During conversion the following items were addressed:
New fuel filter and lift pump.
New filters and oil in engine, trans and transfer case.
New Pro Comp 6-8" lift shocks and extended stainless brake lines.
Sky Jacker drop pitman arm and Dana60 block to correct steering geometry.
Intercooler and intake horn are 94-98 Dodge.
The grid heater is not wired in (12 valve Cummins rarely need them even in cold weather and a lot of guys even delete the heater itself for better air flow) it also has a block heater.
The battery is new.
Rebuilt 47RH trans with O/D on switch
205 transfer case.
Dana 60 front end and 14 full float rear.
New brake booster,
New power steering pump and vacuum pump.
New internal regulator alternator
16 inch wheels with 36" Swamper tires
410 gears but the overdrive helps move it down the road nicely.
Remaining issues with truck:
The tank that the truck is running off of is drivers side- Where you put the nozzle is still the gas size opening. You can still fill up obviously but it takes a little patience. Need to take the neck off and cut out the hole bigger on the inside of the fill tube (not a huge job).
I bought brand new mirrors and when I got them, driver side mirror is cracked, I went ahead and installed them. There are two 3/8 holes in each door from the old mirrors that will need addressed before paint.
Needs headliner, I have the old one for template.
Passenger tank needs converted to Diesel, had plans to install tank in bed and remove original tanks.
Transfer case was resealed, output seal leaked and I installed a speedy sleeve on the yoke, seems to have fixed it.
It has new rear main seal but was seeping for a while but seems to have stopped now.
Electric windows work as should, electric lock works good but unlock only works sometimes May need a switch.
The front end is all tight but sometimes you get a wobble at the left front tire, I put balancing beads in tire but still does it sometimes. I would suspect the tire, was going to address that when I bought new tires.
No accident history that I'm aware of. could use body mount cushions on the bed.
Clear coat was peeling so it was sanded down and primed (grey).
Truckdrives nice, Body in excellent condition and interior is nice. I have only had it in 4x4 once when I offloaded from the trailer the guy brought it to me on from Utah. It is really a nice truck and I have over $21,000 tied up in it to get it where it is right now, but I need to sale to redirect funds to other project.
