1969 Chevelle SS L78 4-speed Rare Daytona Yellow Project
1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
1969 Chevelle SS L78 4-speed project
I am listing a very rare 1969 Chevelle SS project that was has been off the road since 1983 as a true unrestored and unmolested time capsule.
Original Pedigree:
This Chevelle still wears most of its original paint after 48 years! The factory Daytona Yellow paint corresponds with the "76" paint code on the trim tag which, by itself, confirms that this Chevelle is a true SS. The Daytona Yellow "76" paint code was only available with the SS option on 1969 Chevelles. For further 1969 Chevelle info, please checkout the following link:
http://chevellestuff.net/1969/paint.htm
This Chevelle is also equipped with a factory tach with a 6K redline, and a single 3/8" fuel line still in place, which indicate that this Chevelle is a true factory high performance square port, closed chamber and solid lifter 375 H.P. SS 396 car (originally an L78 or possibly an aluminum head L89).
Based on what original items remain intact, (at the very least) this Chevelle was equipped with the following original regular production options (RPO's):
B80 Roof Drip Moldings
C08 Vinyl Roof Cover (Black)
C24 Recessed Wipers
D96 Wide Paint Stripe - Side (Black)
F41 Special Performance Front & Rear Suspension
G80 Rear Axle - (12 Bolt) Positraction
H05 Rear Axle - 3.73:1 Ratio
J50 Power Brakes
J52 PWR Disc Brakes
L78 Engine - V8, 396 Cu. In. Special Hi. Perf.
(definitely a 375 H.P. and possibly even an L89?)
M21 4-Speed Transmission - Close Ratio (definitely a 4-speed, and most likely the M21)
N33 Steering Wheel - Tilt ?????
U14 Special Instrumentation (Tach & Gages)
U63 Radio - AM Push Button
Z25 Super Sport 396
927 SS396 paint
This was once a very striking Chevelle SS given the way it was originally equipped... with Daytona Yellow paint, Black vinyl top, Black body side stripe, Black bench seat interior with a high performance L78 (or L89) motor backed by a 4-speed transmission and 3.73 posi rearend, this Chevelle would have gained a lot of attention!
As I mentioned, this Chevelle still wears most of its faded original paint after 48 years! Some might call it a survivor or a barn find, but it needs restoration. At some point someone removed the windshield and, as a result, the windshield frame, dash and floors are rusted and require repairs. A previous owner began to cut the rusted sections out of the floor (presumably to do spot repairs), but I am including a complete floor section to be used to repair it properly. As is typical with vinyl top cars, moisture got under the vinyl top and rusted the area around the rear window. The trunk has also rusted, and I am including a complete replacement trunk floor to repair it as well. There is also rust at the bottoms of the fenders and quarters. Fortunately, the frame appears to be in good shape.
Whether you decide to preserve the original unrestored patina or give the car a thorough restoration, this will be one spectacular car when it's back on the road. It is missing the front bench and rear seat, but the important hard to find stuff is still here.
The history: According to the NCRS Shipping Data Report, this Chevelle SS was originally delivered to Roy Dunton Motors in Kingman, AZ. At some point early in the car's history, the car made its way out to Georgia. According to people that knew the car, it has been in Washington, GA for the past 40 years or more and has been off the road since 1983. There is a bullet hole near the base of the passenger door, so the car must have seen some excitement at some point... if only cars could talk!
I purchased the car in South Carolina, and moved the car up to Chicago, IL where it is currently located. I have historic Bill of Sales for the car and I have traced the car's history back to Washington, GA. I do not have a Title, so the car will be sold on a Bill of Sale only. A new title can be obtained by applying for a bonded title.I listed the car as having a salvage title, but the car is not titled under a salvage title (there is no listing option for lost or missing title). I have no other dealer or GM documentation, no protect-o plate, no buildsheet for the car other than the NCRS document stating which dealership the car was originally sold at. Anyone that knows Chevelles can easily recognise it's rarity and value as is.
Parts and Dates:
The car still retains most of its original components except the motor and transmission, which are both long gone. The original factory tach and gages are still intact, as well as the tilt steering column and original AM radio. The chassis is still intact with the original power disc brakes, F41 suspension components (boxed control arms, etc.), and the original 12 bolt posi rearend (stamped "CI 0416B") meaning 3.73:1 ratio posi dated April 16th which appears to be the original, given the Chevelle's 04D assembly date. I do not have every nut and bolt for the car, but I have the import stuff.
Other parts included:
Complete reproduction floor section;
Complete reproduction trunk pan.
Other parts NOT included:
I have a running and ready-to-drop-in original L78 motor with a D 8 9 casting date, which is perfect for the Chevelle's 04D build date. This motor is NOT included in the auction, but I will consider selling it to the successful purchaser of the Chevelle.
Bidding, Buying and Transporting the Chevelle:
Please do not bid unless you plan to pay according to the auction terms. The car can be inspected DURING the course of the auction. This is a total project and is being sold AS IS, where is. No guarantees whatsoever. Mileage is exempt and not actual. A $500 NON-refundable deposit is due within 24 hours after the end of the auction, payable via Paypal. No excuses. If you are a real buyer you will have no problem with this. I have bought a lot of items on eBay, but I do not generally sell on eBay. Check my feedback. The balance of the full purchase price must be paid in full via cash or bank wire transfer within 7 days of the end of the auction, and the car does not move until funds are confirmed to be received.
The buyer is responsible for all shipping costs for moving the car and its parts. The car does not run, and is currently on its original rolling chassis. If sold, I will work with the purchaser to make it convenient for their transporter to pick-up the car.
I can be reached at (403) 803-3879. Please read this entire ad before calling. I'm happy to answer questions that I have not already covered. The reserve is far less than my investment. Thanks for looking!
Yes, this is a project, but try finding another Chevelle SS L78 4-speed that has not already been restored, fluffed or faked. Good luck with your bidding.
