1971 Chevrolet Chevelle ss
1971 SS454 Chevelle LS5
"Barn Find"!!! "Survivor"!!, blah, blah blah....
what this is...is an extremely cherry real deal SS454 chevelle. The car has been around my area since new. It was street raced religiouslyin the 70's and early 80's. It was parked around that time when the owner had enough tickets and lost his license enough times that it was a real problem. Then the car kind of got lost track of, I tracked it down through his uncle a couple years ago. The chevelle had been inside the back of garage without being started since then. Brought it home and put a battery and fresh fluids in it and got it started. So that led to some basic maintenance that had been overlooked for a couple decades. The front sat high and so did the rear, the original old school proper American Racing wheels (not Repops!) were pretty nice but the tires were just carcasses. I replaced the ball joints, lower a-arm bushings and rear link bushings, along with installing new springs front and rear. The wheel were cleaned up and the bias tires replaced with Mickey Thompson radials. Drives beautifully and stance is period 70's perfect. The radiator core was rotted out, I installed an aluminum OE fit replacement and kept the original radiator that is steamed and cleaned and goes with car. The original speedo bounced and squeaked, so I found a nice used one and swapped it in. I have the original with factory dates on it and mileage. I meant to get it restored and reinstalled some day, it goes with car too. The motor runs great, its a 1970 built car and has the correct 512 block.It is a 1970 LS5, nobody seems to remember when it gotswapped buta couple guys remember rings and bearings at some point.It has original intake, distribrutor, even some of the hoses and clamps that are still in good shape. The q jet was gone and it has a 750DP that works great. To the best of everyone's memory it had a LS6 cam, lifters and springs installed at the local chevy dealer when it was just about new and had a set of Mickey Thompson Super Scavenger headersand M/T valve covers installed...the covers AND Scavengers are still on it. I did put new walker turbo mufflers and 2 1/2 exhaust on with NOS real GM SS tips. With the solids adjusted and the scavengers TINGING & POPPING...it makes the hair on your neck stand up and brings a tear to your eye thinking about the heyday of musclecar! damn, maybe I should keep it... I have the build sheet for it, pretty basic big block car;
SS454 365hp / th400 / red exterior / black interior /bench seat / tilt wheel / tach and gauges / stripe delete / non cowl induction / 2.73 posi
as far as anyone remembers it has 4.10 gears, I looked at housing it is marked as the original 2.73 posi. The car was painted over the factory red, the jams and under trunk etc. are still original,the inside of trunk has never been touched. The passenger fender was replaced with a used original fender, story was he was running from cops and slid into ditch. I replaced the front seat cover because it was split and put new carpet in because the original was worn threadbare. 95% of interior is unmolested original, along with trim, chrome, bumpers, lenses, hood pins and lanyards.has original SS wheel for the spare, jack, etc .all there. I am not a used car salesman, I am not a musclecar "flipper", sinceI bought thismyfamily has expanded with a little girl (number 4)So... I am building a 1970 K5 blazer instead. This is a great car, its a great driver, its great fun at car shows, paint it worn and thin but everybody loves it. It has a great story, hell, it tells a great story just sitting there, it lookslike Wooderson just pulled up tothe Drive-In. It sounds WICKED AWESOME withtheoriginal real deal scavengersand GM solid lifter cam. Runs hard too. Please ask any questions you have. I have video, can take video, pics, whatever you need...Feel comfortable to ask away. Thanks and hope it goes to a new home to be maintained and enjoyed by another.
