Description:

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle

1970 Chevelle Nomad Wagon with Big Block

This is an unfinished project car with a high performance drive train. It was built with the intent of racing at the Bonneville Salt Flats and is geared with the potential to reach a 200 MPH top speed. It was also being built to be street legal. It runs but has not been street driven.

The engine is a '79 Big Block Chevy 454 that has been bored 0.060 over and stroked 1/4" for 496 cubic inches. It has a Holley 850 CFM Carburetor (80531, 1307), Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum intake manifold, stock Chevy heads with semi open combustion chambers, domed pistons for 10.5:1 compression, an Elgin high lift, long duration, solid lifter, camshaft, HEI ignition, H-connecting rods, and GM aluminum valve covers.

It has a Centerforce 11" clutch, a scatter shield, and professionally rebuild Muncie 4 speed transmission with a Hurst Competitions shifter and a driveshaft loop.

The differential is Chevy's strongest a 12 bolt with new aftermarket axles, new bearings, Richmond Powertrak (performs similar to Positraction) and a 2.73:1 gear ratio all professionally installed. Aftermarket adjustable 4 link bars and rear air shocks have been installed.

It has Hedman tube headers, full 2 1/2" exhaust with a crossover pipe, and turbo mufflers.

It has a high performance 4 core radiator and 18" flex fan with shroud and the car does not overheat.

The front suspension has been re-built and Heidts 2" drop spindles were installed. It originally had drum brakes and stock disc brakes were installed on the front. The calipers need to be re-built. A used stock vacuum assist master brake cylinder is included but has not been installed.

The tires are BF Goodrich G-Force Sports, 91V 205/60R15. Four are on the car and one more mounted on a rim is included. The tires are all at 100% tread life.

The glass is all good and it has power steering and the alternator works.

Included but not installed: Stock AM radio, New dash cover, Racing seats, Mooneye full moon hub caps, console hump panel and boot for shifter, 8000 RPM Tachometer, and Interior trim pieces.

The stock front seat and the bottom half only of the back seat is included. The interior needs a total restoration and you can see from the pictures what's left to do to restore the exterior. The driver's side floor has rusted through requiring repair and the spare tire well is rusted out.

To the best of my knowledge the 1970 Chevelle Nomad wagon shares the following body panels with the El Camino and GMC Sprint: left and right front fenders, inner fenders, and hood. The front bumper is the same as the Chevelle. Some of the smaller parts like hood hinges and door handle may interchange but I do not have details.

The car has been run and pulls very hard however very fine rust from the gas tank has made its way into the carburetor which now needs a rebuild to get the very fine rust out. This has caused a problem with the car not wanting to idle properly. The gas tank needs to be removed and the rust removed from the fuel system. The engine runs rough until it is up to full operating temperature

How does it drive?...The car was built with a high lift long duration cam and 2.73:1 differential gear ratio to maximize top speed at Bonneville not drivability on the street. Changing the differential gear ratio would be a necessity for a street driven car. It otherwise drives straight and has no drivability problems that I am aware of. It is cold blooded and must be allowed to come up to full operating temperature before driving.

There is less than one mile on the drive train since rebuilds. This would be a very powerful drive train for any GM A-Body:Chevrolet Chevelle, El Camino, Malibu, Monte Carlo / Buick Skylark, Special, Grand Sport, Regal, Century/ Pontiac Lemans, GTO, Tempest / Oldsmobile Cutlass, 442, F-85.

The buyer is responsible for pickup or shipping of this vehicle. If you wish to have it shipped using a service, then you are still responsible for all payment and pickup time requirements. I do not ship but will work with shippers. Due to the Heidts 2" drop spindles there is 2" ground clearance under the front of the car.

Although I have done my best to describe this vehicle there is a possibility that I might overlooked some appearance or mechanical details. The car is not currently registered, there are no liens against the car, and a rebuilt title will be provided. The definition of rebuilt title varies from state to state please contact your DMV for details.
