This 1957 Chevrolet 3100 pickup represents an interesting chapter in 20th century automotive history. Popularly identified as a “NAPCO” truck, it has its origins in the Northwestern Auto Parts Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded in 1918, the company quickly found success as a supplier of specialized automotive parts to U.S. Government contractors. After World War II, NAPCO turned its immense manufacturing capabilities to private business while still focusing on the automotive parts industry, its product line including four-wheel drive conversion kits for pickups and other small truck lines. To meet rising demand by General Motors, in 1954 the company began supplying its proprietary “Powr-Pak” assembly line conversion kits to GMC and Chevrolet. This pickup was originally produced using NAPCO’s factory-installed four-wheel drive system. The truck still uses the original matching-numbers drivetrain, which includes Chevrolet’s 235 CI Thriftmaster Special inline-6 engine and 4-speed manual transmission.
