If you grew up around a set of wrenches, you know nothing screams MUSCLE CAR louder than a Chevelle SS454. And even though the Mopar camp does a pretty good job of representing brute force, and the blue oval boys had their fair share of big engine glory, terms like "LS5", "big block" and "Super Sport" are probably some of the first sounds you remember hearing. Thankfully the significance of those terms only grows with time and education, making cars like this impressive LS5-equipped Chevelle all the more desirable. And currently, decked in classic white on blue war paint, this awesome Chevy is the product of an extensive frame-off restoration that fostered a return to factory glory and then some. If you're looking to own one of the world's most sought after muscle cars, this show stopping Chevelle is fully-sorted and ready to please!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Hailing from GM's storied, and still functional, Arlington, Texas facility, this stunning LS5 Super Sport is the beneficiary of a high quality, frame-off restoration that's so nice it schools factory survivors. After professional metalwork, which resulted in a straight and solid profile, the car's panels were layered in correct Fathom Blue basecoat, accented with Classic White rally stripes and sealed in a thick clearcoat shell. Once that clearcoat was allotted sufficient drying time, its surfaces were sanded and buffed into a ripple-free finish that's literally as smooth as glass. And today, this top dog Chevelle sits as a spectacular piece of iconic American muscle that's detailed to better-than-new standards.
Many enthusiasts believe the '70 Chevelle introduced a host of excellent refinements which transformed the 'good' design of Chevrolet's '69 model into something 'great'. At the front of this blue barn burner you'll find a familiar crossbar grille which hangs a fresh and prominent "SS" emblem between a small "CHEVELLE" script, four stainless-trimmed T3s and a fresh chrome bumper. Above that bumper, a functional cowl induction hood anchors rebuilt hide-a-way wipers at the base of new glass that's framed by pristine stainless trim and capped by new chrome drip rails. At the base of those drip rails, new red and white inlayed "SS454" badges combine with straight stainless wheel frames, traditional chrome door handles and flashy chrome mirrors to add visual detail to the car's liquid smooth profile. And at the back of that profile, a second chrome bumper hangs a black Super Sport inlay between clear brake lights, a fresh "Chevelle by Chevrolet" trunk emblem and spotless chrome exhaust tips.
ENGINE
In 1970, if you wanted a top-of-the-line Chevelle, you had two options. You could order an LS6 car and put up with a moody, uncivilized big block that didn't like running accessories. Or you could order an LS5 car and have a nicely optioned, well-rounded performer that stomped pretty much anything on the street. Either way you'd have an awesome ride, but the irony of the situation is: LS5 cars are actually RARER than LS6 cars! Rolling out of the factory with an impressive 360 horsepower and massive 500 lb./ft. of torque, this Chevelle's correct LS5 454 is fully rebuilt and ready for show. At the top of the big engine, a functional cowl induction system forces wind into a single-snorkel air cleaner that's propped on a familiar Rochester 4-barrel. At the sides of that carburetor, mirror-like valve covers loom new Packard TV R Suppression wires above correct heads and fully restored exhaust manifolds. At the back of those manifolds, a traditional points distributor stands beside a new wiper motor and a fresh power brake booster. Opposite that brake booster, a shrouded radiator sends water past a correct Frigidaire compressor via new GM hoses and reproduction tower clamps. And at the side of those clamps, a tagged Delco Energizer jolts a newly built alternator. Naturally, the car's satin black engine bay and Chevy Orange block are highlighted by a series of factory-accurate markings. And all of the engine's belts, hardware and stainless lines are in the kind of excellent, showroom-fresh condition that ensures big points and great performance.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Naturally, the bottom of this Chevelle is just as clean and correctly restored as its straight body panels and pristine engine bay. The car's rust-free floors are, like its body, covered in a nice layer of Fathom Blue basecoat. Its fully restored F41 heavy duty suspension, which includes thicker coils, heavy duty shocks, a larger diameter front sway bar, a standard rear sway bar, boxed rear control arms and upper rear cross braces, appears to be in better-than-new condition. Behind the big block motor, an original Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed, which wears a correct "70 CF" ID tag above a matching 204152 partial VIN, sends power to a correct 12 bolt rear end. At the sides of that drivetrain, a free-flowing, true-dual exhaust system funnels charred dinos through large mufflers and spotless chrome tips. At the sides of that exhaust, power front disc and rear drum brakes combine with traditional power steering to provide modern handling ability. At the sides of those brakes, hand-painted Super Sport wheels spin great looking F70-14 Firestone Wide Ovals around "SS" branded center caps. And while this Chevy's specs sound pretty straight forward, the quality of its rebuild is simply remarkable!
INTERIOR
Featuring a host of new components, and decked in what is arguably one of the coolest colors offered for the 1970 model year, this Chevelle's correctly restored GM code 762 Medium Blue interior is both inviting and unique. Its slick bucket and bench combo, which used to be strictly bench, is firm to the touch and shows no signs of wear at all. In front of those seats, a straight and crack-free dash hangs deluxe Chevelle gauges behind factory AC controls and a correct Delco radio. Below that dash, a stainless-trimmed console anchors a traditional horseshoe shifter above clean blue carpet and thick rubber floor mats. At the sides of that carpet, pick-free door panels center spotless stainless trim and prerequisite "SS" emblems on bright chrome handles and pliable blue armrests. In front of the driver, a reproduction GM Rally wheel utilizes a tilting factory column to keep everything pointed straight. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk anchors a full-size spare and correct jack assembly between a new mat and fresh decklid decal.
At roughly half the cost and twice the fun of a numbers matching piece, this killer Chevelle is the total package! With a powerful 454, an original TH400 3-speed and a first class restoration, it's a fully-sorted classic that virtually spells the term "bragging rights". If you're ready to add some fresh firepower to your automotive arsenal, don't miss the chance to take home this pristine Chevrolet legend!
