1968 Chevrolet Chevelle
This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu is pure sleeper, and it does it extremely well. Not faked up with SS badges and stripes, but still packing serious firepower, this car is definitely an iron fist in a silk glove. The fact that it's also nicely detailed and beautifully finished only adds to the appeal. This is sleeper done right! This car was originally code F Island Teal, so when the time came to repaint it, that's what went back on. It's not really teal, but rather a nice medium blue that looks great on the Chevelle bodywork and it's exactly the low-key color you want on a car like this. Not designed to attract attention, it's instead designed to highlight the straight sheetmetal while staying out of the limelight. Fit and finish are good all around and even though it's a few years old now, the paint remains in great shape. During the restoration, the original black vinyl top removed, which also helps with the stealthy look, but all the original trim and emblems appear to be intact, so most folks will walk right by this car without knowing the awesome firepower that lives inside. If you're the right kind of guy, that's insanely appealing. The interior is built for combat the way GM did it back in 1968, offering bucket seats, a console, and a 4-speed shifter on top. The upholstery is in great shape and uses correct factory-style patterns and materials, so it looks like 1968 all over again inside. The three-spoke steering wheel is sporting and there's a modern tach strapped to the steering column, complete with shift light for running in the heat of battle. Original gauges cover only the basics, so a trio of auxiliary dials was added under the dash to monitor the hot stroker motor under the hood. There's a digital AM/FM stereo radio in the original radio's location and they've cleverly added R134a A/C using subtle under-dash vents and modern hardware, so it's effective without changing the overall look. The Hurst 4-speed shifter has a traditional cue ball knob and it feels great to rack it through the gears at speed. The trunk is properly outfitted with a reproduction mat and a full-sized spare with jack assembly. The original engine is gone, replaced by a 383 cubic inch stroker motor based on a late-model Vortec foundation. An Edelbrock intake manifold, Holley carburetor, and a mild cam make this small block feel like a big block, and with 9.7:1 compression, it's happy to run all day on pump gas. It's neatly dressed with chrome valve covers and air cleaner, a serpentine belt drive system, and modern accessories for reliability, all slotted neatly into the original engine bay. Power steering and power disc brakes from a Monte Carlo are probably mandatory for something this fast, and the rumbling Flowmaster exhaust system is a bit of a tipoff that there's something big going on under the hood. The aforementioned 4-speed transmission is a Muncie M22 rock-crusher and it's linked to a 12-bolt rear end full of 3.73 gears, so you know it's built right. Clean floors are a nice bonus and it sits on 15-inch Rally wheels with staggered 215/65/15 front and 245/60/15 rear BFGoodrich T/A radials.Nicely restored, tuned to rumble, and a lot of fun on the street, this Chevelle Malibu is a refreshing breath of air in a world filled with pretender Chevelles covered in SS badges.
