Description:

1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z-06 Big Tank

This beautiful Sebring Silver with Black interior, Sting Ray Z06 includes a 360 horsepower fuel injected small block, a close ratio M21 4-speed transmission, and a positraction rear axle with 4:11 gears. This particular Z06 is especially rare is because of its 36-gallon gas tank (N03). Originally for long distance racing the massive fuel tank takes up a large portion of the cargo space, and is the reason this car is referred to as a “big tank” Z06.

This Z-06 Corvette has been inspected by several experts and determined to be a true Z-06 Big Tank by all of them.
Z-06 109331 benefited from a complete restoration in the mid to late 90's and still presents very well today. Only a few minor paint flaws are noted. The car was also judged in the mid 90's as "Bloomington Silver." This great and rare car missed Bloomington Gold because it's original data tag reputedly was not replaced during the restoration and it now sports a repro data tag. This is questionable.

Z-06 109331 has been extensively reviewed by as well by several respected Z06 experts who confirmed that it is an original Z06 car. They also strongly believes that it is an original big tanker car. Any serious buyer is welcome to contact seller for information and further details.

The RPO Z06 package first offered on ’63 models included a 20 percent larger diameter front antiroll bar, a vacuum brake booster, a dual master cylinder, sintered-metallic brake linings within power-assisted Al-Fin drums cooled by front air scoops and vented backing plates, larger diameter shocks and springs nearly twice as stiff as standard.
These Corvettes came to be known as known as the “Big Tanks” because the package initially had a 36.5-gallon gas tank versus the standard 20-gallon for races such as Sebring and Daytona. At first, the package was only available on coupes because the oversize tank would not fit in the convertible.
The only engine option on the Z06 was the L84 327-cubic-inch displacement engine with Rochester fuel injection. With factory exhaust manifolds, required to run the cars in the Sports Car Club of America’s production classes, Chevrolet rated the engine at 360 horsepower.
Z06 cost an extra $1,818.45 over the base coupe price of $4,252. Chevrolet later lowered the package price and eliminated the big tank from the Z06 package though it remained available as a single add-on option for any coupe. Chevy then began offering Z06 on the convertible as well. Chevy produced 199 Z06s. Of those 199, many likely were used for play versus strictly racing as only 124 cars were delivered without radios and just 63 with the 36-gallon fuel tank - though the tank was a benefit only to long races.

ONE YEAR CLASSIC-1963 Corvette

The many unique features of the 1963 model, including, of course, the famous split window so beloved by Bill Mitchell and so detested by Zora Arkus-Duntov. Zora eventually won out, making the split window a one-year only classic. The original hubcaps are made of 17 pieces and were only used one year, making them very hard to find.

Chevy designed a lot of things for the ’63 that proved very difficult to make work in actual production, and when it came to 1964 models, they made some subtle changes so the factory workers could actually assemble it. Some of those changes, in fact, actually came late in the 1963 model year. The side mirrors, for example were changed, giving them a longer stem so they could actually be useful for drivers. There were many other things that made the 1963 Corvette special other than the Iconic SPLIT WINDOW
