This is an ultra rare Chevelle SS convertible, U Code. The U in the VIN states that it was born with a 402 big block. It now has a date-coded 1973 454 engine. I was told that the vehicle was sold new in North Carolina, and I'm the third owner. Being a factory big block 4-speed convertible in 1972 makes it one of the rarest Chevelles you can find aside from the 454 version. Chevelle data states that 1.3% (4853) of Chevelles were convertibles. 29,946 Chevelles had the SS option, and only 3000 had the 454/402 big block option. Most convertibles were automatic. Very few factory 4-speed convertibles were produced. Some GM experts say that less than 400 were built in 1972. This 4-speed option looks to be factory correct, no butchering.
This car was freshened up in 2016 with new base coat clear coat. 75 code cranberry red. This car has no rust issues whatsoever. It has new bumpers, grill, tires, exhaust, door panels, convertible top with new boot, door handles, etc. It's a blast to drive with the big block 4-speed option. It carries a 12 bolt 3:31 posi rear end as well. I believe you could drive this car anywhere. The 4 core radiator will NOT let the car run hot.
