1967 Chevrolet Malibu

Honesty matters in this business, whether you're a pedigreed Corvette or an entry-level cruiser, as is this case with this bright red 1967 Chevrolet Malibu hardtop. Not a fake SS, not dressed up with a big block and racing stripes, just a clean entry-level car that gets all the important stuff right. There's a crate motor, air conditioning, and a clean interior that's just right for road trips. Sometimes staying true to your roots makes a difference. There are a lot of guys who will argue that the mid-60s A-bodies were the best-looking of all the Malibu/Chevelle twins, and who are we to dispute that belief? This one certainly has the goods, starting with that bright Bolero Red paint, which replaces the ho-hum code C Ermine White but keeps it factory-correct. These cars are especially picky about straight bodywork, because that long crease along the flanks is hard to disguise if you get it wrong. The doors fit well, the flying buttress C-pillars are razor sharp, and there's clearly a lot of time invested in blocking and sanding the bodywork before the paint went on. The paint job was done to a good standard, and shows a few flaws that happened while the paint was still wet, but overall it's got a brilliant shine and a great look. If you want perfection, you can pay more for it, but this car looks great and doesn't need any apologies. The same goes for the chrome and trim, which is Malibu stuff, not Chevelle SS, and there's good chrome, shiny stainless, and correct emblems, all of which make this car look right. The black bench seat interior has been freshened over the years so everything has a cohesive, all-of-a-piece look. There are some original bits, but things like the door panels, seat cover, carpets, and dash pad have surely been replaced at some point and the woodgrained details are still in excellent condition. Factory gauges cover the basics, but you'll note factory A/C is part of the deal here, all powered by upgraded hardware working behind the scenes. There's also a handsome 3-spoke steering wheel, a column-mounted shifter for the new TH350 3-speed automatic transmission, and nicely detailed brightwork on the passenger's side of the dash. There is no radio, but that means it's your opportunity to install the entertainment system of your choice and that big trunk is perfect for hauling gear on a road trip. The original 283 was replaced by a 350 cubic inch crate motor and it's a lot stronger than you'd expect. Wearing Chevy Orange and an open-element air cleaner, it looks fairly factory, especially with those simple valve covers. On the other hand, upgrades like the Holley carburetor, Summit Racing intake manifold, and HEI ignition suggest it was built to drive, not to pose on a show field. The serpentine drive system also uses modern accessories, including a late-model A/C compressor and alternator, and there's a new power brake booster with dual master cylinder. Dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers gives it a suitably racy sound and this particular Chevelle packs rear air shocks, front disc brakes, and a fresh gas tank so it's ready to cruise. 3.36 gears in the 10-bolt rear end are a nice compromise between acceleration and highway comfort, and you already know how well these cars ride and handle. 235/60/15 radials on Rally wheels finish the look. Not perfect and needing a little polishing to get to the next level, this Malibu doesn't need to pretend to be something it's not, because at this price, it's already a lot of fun at a great value.
